Our Story
Founded in 2002, Columbia University Bhangra is a competitive collegiate dance team, committed to fostering an appreciation of Punjabi culture in both its dancers and audiences alike. Bhangra is a folk dance originating from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan that celebrates the harvest and everyday life of Punjab.
Columbia Bhangra adds a modern twist to Punjabi dance. Inspired by the diversity, modernity, and energy of NYC, Columbia Bhangra combines traditional and contemporary styles of Bhangra. The team has been focused on creating modern, entertaining, and energetic routines, and stands out for its iconic style and energy in the Bhangra circuit.
The team has performed at some of the top competitions in the country, including but not limited to Bhangra Blowout, Big Apple Bhangra, Bhangra in the Burgh, and Boston Bhangra Competition. Columbia Bhangra also hosts its own showcase each spring called Bhangra in the Heights, the biggest Bhangra showcase in the tristate area.
