USA Fencing announces The Peter Westbrook(‘74) Trailblazer Award, which honors clubs doing noteworthy work in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging — specifically those who are increasing access for under-represented groups.

We’re proud to introduce a set of four new awards designed to recognize USA Fencing member clubs for their efforts to ensure fencing is a welcoming and inclusive sport for all.

NYU alumnus Jim Bonacorda recently visited Ellen Cakouros, his junior high school fencing coach. Ellen’s husband and Jim’s high school coach, Tom Cakouros passed away on June 23, 2022. Both Ellen and Tom were NYU alumni.

One of Tom’s wishes was that Jim be given the Castello Trophy (previously the Biddle Trophy), which was awarded to the best high school/prep school fencing team in the tri-state area. The tournament was held from 1943 to 1969. Newfield High School won the championship in 1969 and 1968, and was runner-up in 1967. Jim was a member of the 1969 team, along with NYU alumni Mike Lovis and Herb Mones.

The bronze trophy was sculpted by Evelyn Beatrice Longman in 1908. Evelyn was a sculptor in the U.S. Her allegorical figure works were commissioned as monuments and memorials, adornment for public buildings, and attractions at art expositions in early 20th-century America. She was the first woman sculptor to be elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1919.

Ellen and Tom mentored Jim and many teammates on the path less traveled, and that has made all the difference.
