Looking forward to getting back on campus.

Over the past five years, three of the fencing teams atop the national podium were clad in light blue. The Lions are not only regulars at the NCAAs, but also almost always in contention for the championship. Led by head coach Michael Aufrichtig, who heralds a strong “team first” philosophy, Colu...

Careful. Jumping on to a virtual workout without the benefit of an assessment to determine your capacity, may work against you.

Sports injuries are going to occur. It's part of the risk of participating in sports, but why they occur and how they're handled are important to analyze.

Admittedly, when I came to work with the Columbia Fencing Team, I was really interested in the opportunity to get inside the mind of a championship coach, and helping a top flight fencing program regain its championship status. Something else happened. Respect. I developed a deep respect for these student/athletes. They are not like athletes you see garnering highlights on ESPN, many of whom don’t endure the academic demands these students face. Recently, I spoke with one sophomore fencer who had only five hours sleep over a four day period because he had a paper due. This is not the exception for this team. This may be why top high school fencers don’t commit to Columbia. It’s a challenge that demands high scholastic achievement, physical conditioning, and a commitment to teammates. In spite of this, they produce championships. And yes, it takes a coach who understands how to recruit students with both the skills and the character to not only survive the rigors, but thrive. It really isn’t a fencing program with clearly defined steps that lead to a championship. It’s a system that is constantly re-evaluated, and adjusted accordingly. There’s nothing conventional about it. Success, here, is based on accountability. From the coach, all the way down to, well, yours truly.

Welcome this newest member to the Ki-Hara athlete roster, Ms. Nzingha Prescod. I’ve been waiting five years to say that. A couple of months ago, the two-time Olympian finally contacted me to ask if I’d help her get to Tokyo in 2020. I’m over the top ecstatic!!!

Fencer Nzingha Prescod became the first African-American woman to win an individual medal at the Senior World Championships in 2015. In this short documentar...
