One thing that many of us worry about as we get older is getting injured. There are all kinds of injuries that can slow us down, take away our mobility, and make it more difficult for us to enjoy our lives. And back injuries can be horrible to deal with.

So… what if I told you that studying martial arts can help protect and strengthen your back, making it less likely that you’ll injure it or end up with a problem?

It’s true. Martial arts workouts strengthen your whole body. In particular, they do a great job of strengthening your core muscles. These are the muscles in the middle of your body, and they include your pelvic floor muscles, abdominals, lateral and back muscles, and even your gluteus maximus.

When these core muscles are fit and strong, they stabilize your back. They help you to stand and sit straight, and they provide your back with the support it needs.

Does this mean you’ll never get a back injury? Well, we can’t promise that – we’re all different, and accidents happen. What we can tell you, though, is that you’ll be less likely to tweak your back when the muscles that support it are strong.

What if you’ve experienced back injuries in the past or even had back surgery? You might be wondering if it’s safe for you to take martial arts classes. That’s an important issue, so let’s talk about it.

The first thing you should know is that if you’ve had serious back issues, you should talk to your doctor before signing up with us. Your safety and health are important.

Tired of your aching back? Martial arts can help!

If your doctor gives you the go-ahead, then come and talk to us. We can make sure that your instructors know about your concerns, and they can provide you with modified workouts if you need them. They can also monitor any sparring or partnered training to minimize the chances you’ll get hurt.

We’ve had many students with back problems who’ve reported less pain and discomfort after they started taking martial arts classes with us. As long as your doctor says it’s okay, we’re happy to have you in our classes.

In this video, I show three methods to make a fist when training martial arts.

You probably already know that high cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. What you might not know is that exercise is one of the best ways to lower your LDL cholesterol, raise your HDL cholesterol (that’s the good kind), and lower your triglycerides.

It’s true. A combination of cardiovascular exercise and resistance training can help you get your cholesterol under control. And our Adult MA classes provide both!

I’ve already told you that martial arts classes are a great cardio workout. But did you know that they’re also a form of resistance training? All that means is that in martial arts, you’ll be using your own body weight as a form of resistance. That means it can help you build and tone your muscles.

You should still be careful with what you eat. Eating a lot of processed foods and saturated fat won’t do your cholesterol levels any favors. But working out regularly with us has helped some of our students lower their cholesterol. That includes some who’ve been able to stop taking medication!

The bottom line – and the takeaway from these last three emails – is that taking martial arts classes can do a lot to protect and strengthen your heart. It’s a good way to get your blood pressure and cholesterol under control, and you may be able to stop relying on prescription medications to manage these issues.
