Stef's book: THE MAP: AN ACTOR'S GUIDE TO ON-CAMERA ACTING is available for preorder. Stef Tovar is an award-winning actor, author, and on-camera acting coach from Chicago. His breakout on-screen role was Dr. Arrington in CONTAGION, directed by Steven Soderbergh—where he treats Patient Zero (Gwyneth Paltrow) and must tell her husband (Matt Damon) of her death. As an actor, Stef works regularly in

television, film, commercials, and theater and splits his time between Chicago and Los Angeles. Tovar teaches his on-camera acting workshop at universities, acting studios, and casting offices across the country. www.StefTovar.com

As actors, we have many things we carry with us into the audition room. While Meisner, Viewpoints and other acting techniques can help you become a more well-rounded actor in the rehearsal room, they don’t serve you in your on-camera auditions. Stef's on-camera technique is a simple, step-by-step process that is designed to put you in control of the material and give you the best possible audition through the camera lens. He approaches on-camera work technically--like learning a new language. You can be an amazing actor—but if you don’t understand the language of on-camera acting, your audition won’t translate. Stef can help you become a better on-camera actor by learning the language on-camera that will help you in the audition room, on Zoom callbacks and with your self-tapes.

BACK TO SCHOOL! That means registration for my Fall On-Camera and Self-Tape Intensive is OPEN.

My full-time job has been getting really busy, so this will be my LAST 4-Week Intensive. I love this format so much—it’s perfect for actor’s growth. And I cover EVERYTHING, it’s just become too much with my schedule.

SO—let’s go out with a BANG, shall we!?

Join me Monday night in the “Self-Tape Gym” at 7pm! It’s FREE. Send me your most recent self-tape and we’ll watch it together as a group. We’ll ask four questions:

1. Are we watching an “Actor” or just the person that is the role?
2. Is there a beginning, middle and end to their self-tape?
3. Does the actor set up the room—and by this I mean: where they are-do we get a sense of environment, who they are talking to, what is their relationship is to the person they are talking to, etc
4. Is the actor going too fast?

We focus on STORY, not the acting. Is your self-tape clear so that casting can sit back and watch your performance. Send your self-tape to [email protected] or just email me for the link to observe.

See you there! 💪🏻

We’re down to the last few spots.

If you’ve been waiting to register for HOW TO SELF-TAPE YOUR MUSICAL THEATRE & POP AUDITIONS — now is the time.

July 12–14 | Evanston | $695 | 11 hours with Roberta Duchak and Stef Tovar

This is not a lecture. This is hands-on work. You tape. You get coached. You leave knowing exactly what to do the next time a casting notice lands in your inbox.

The Boy is back in town.

I hadn’t seen my son play live in a long time. So even though he said, “Don’t come. I’m not playing much in this set.” I Am and I took the El down to Reggie’s and watched him play on the School of Rock Chicago Staff Set.

He Rocked.

He plays multiple instruments, but when you ask him what he plays he always says: “Drums”. And he’s such a talented drummer. But I’m never able to actually watch him or get a good pic when he’s playing drums! I like him front and center.

Proud Dad. Welcome home Sam.

Here’s the thing about musical theater self-tapes that nobody talks about:

THE CAMERA DOESN’T WANT YOUR STAGE PERFORMANCE.

You’ve trained to project. To fill a room. To make the people in the back row feel something. That training is REAL. It’s valuable. But through a lens? That same energy reads as “trying.”

You need your musical theatre self-tape to get you in the room for a callback, but camera reads your performance differently. You have to modulate.

The Map® technique — combined with Roberta’s knowledge of what musical theater casting actually needs — will change how you approach every audition tape you make from here on out.

3 days this July. 11 hours. Spots are already gone.

Two coaches. Two completely different tools. One workshop.

Roberta Duchak is the North American Music Supervisor for SIX THE MUSICAL and the vocal coach behind Broadway’s THE NOTEBOOK, HELL’S KITCHEN, and THE WIZ. She has been on the other side of the table. She’s watched thousands of musical theater self-tapes and she knows exactly what separates the ones that get callbacks from the ones that don’t.

Stef Tovar here — Jeff Award-winning actor (Chicago PD, Contagion, Chicago Med), and author of The Map®: An Actor’s Guide to On-Camera Acting (Applause Books). My job is to help you not look like an actor in your self-tapes.

Together? July 12–14 in Evanston. Only a handful of spots left.

When I did my first big feature film in LA back in 2003, I almost got fired (if it weren’t for the director being a friend) because I didn’t understand LESS IS MORE.

Matt Dillon certainly understood less is more and it was amazing to watch him execute.

Actors: Less is more. We’ve all heard it. But how do you EXECUTE it? It’s about THINKING instead of SHOWING.

***HOW DO YOU THINK INSTEAD OF SHOW? I can teach you.

It’s a LANGUAGE you can learn and apply to your acting technique.

Grab of the final spots and learn this language with me.
