The Prom musical is the story of the right of one girl to bring her girlfriend to prom.

The Color Purple takes place across forty years of American history. There was no prom. There was no activist brigade. There was no one coming to fight for African Americans much less LGBTQ people. There was only two Black women who found each other despite their circumstances.

That’s not a love story. That’s an act of resistance.

The Prom musical sends Broadway activists into a conservative town to fight for equity. In my mashup, we time travel to Paris — could Barry have gotten Satine healthcare, Dee Dee Allen get Christian a job on the Great White Way and could the troop get the pair Equity cards? I’m ready for that musical. 😂

Bernardo didn't hate Tony. He hated what Tony represented — every system already trying to take what little the local Hispanic community had left. You can't argue someone out of that. You can only earn enough trust to make one rethink their argument.

The Prom's Broadway activists would have had their work cut out for them on the Upper West Side.

In The Prom musical, Emma created the prom she wanted to see. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie had an existential crisis and chose the kind of woman she wanted to be. Two different worlds, each pressuring their heroines to embrace inauthenticity just to exist.

Kenough said.

She arrived widowed, with a young son, and lots of opinions. He arrived with 200 wives, a palace full of children, and a very firm position on the word “et cetera.”

They argued about everything. They waltzed exactly once. Neither of them ever fully recovered.

Prom the Musical asks when is dance just a dance. Or is it the night you dance with the person you’ll spend years pretending you don’t think about?
