Why do you believe
the things you believe about
Strength Training and fitness & who taught you those things?
🏋🏻‍♀️
For example, who taught you that Strength Training makes you bulky and injured?
🏃🏽
Why do you think running (Or Yoga, Or Pilates, Or Spin...) is The BEST form of exercise? How do you know?
🧘🏻‍♀️
And Why, in the name of all things Sacred, Do you think It's TOO LATE?
⛹🏾‍♀️
As women, so much of what we "know" and think about strength and fitness is based on outdated science and biased, patriarchal BS.
🤼
And the whole "Getting Bulky" thing is just the tip of the iceberg.
🤸🏾
Within the last 100-years, women have been told by scientists and medical professionals that vigorous exercise would make them "crazy" or infertile.
🤺
You know what makes me "crazy!?"
NOT EXERCISING !
🏄🏽‍♂️
Also, policing and controlling a woman's body is NOT COOL, Patriarchy!
Not Cool AT ALL.
🚴🏾‍♀️
So what do you say, my fellow middle-aged female humans?
💃🏻
Isn't it time to reexamine the truth and reject what is outdated, so that we can live the second half of our lives feeling healthy and strong?
⛷️
I don't know about you, but I have a lot more s**t to do!
💪🏼
And I need to be
strong, healthy and confident to do it!
🏋🏻‍♀️
And it starts with Strength Training. I'll teach you how.

3 things you can to make the weight room less scary.
😱
#1. Walk in. Walk around. Leave. Repeat.
😱
Strength training is impossible if you are terrified to go into the area where the strength equipment is.
😱
So start by simply walking around. Get the lay of the land. Look at the equipment. Then leave! Keep doing this until you feel more confident. Then go for it!
😱
#2. Have a goal.
😱
Without a goal the fear and intimidation WIN. Pick a goal that feels like a reach but still feels exciting or fun to pursue. Remind yourself of that goal before you train. And remember, it’s ok to rest and regroup. It’s not OK to quit.
😱
#3. Get a plan.
😱
Without a plan, goals become wishes.
😱
Don’t go it alone. Hire a coach or trainer to make you a plan. Or buy a training template. Plans keep the “scaries” at bay.
😱
Good luck. You’ve got this!
😱

I have been strength training for many, many years. For the most part, I feel a sense of belonging in the gym. And yet, there are moments when I have to overcome some minor feelings of intimidation to take my place in the squat rack.
🏋🏻‍♀️
To be clear, this never happens in the CrossFit gym or barbell club. Honestly, it’s the traditional “globo gym” that still feels like Mantown USA.
🏋🏻‍♀️
On days when I am not training Olympic Lifts, I go to my local Y to do accessory work.
🏋🏻‍♀️
I train with purpose and focus. But always have a little of my attention trained on the stares coming from the sea of dudes around me.
I stare back.
🏋🏻‍♀️
I’ve gotten a few comments over the years. Mostly just middle aged men telling me how “good I am at lifting…” 🙄
🏋🏻‍♀️
Usually I just say, “Thanks, man. It’s my job…” and they go away.
🏋🏻‍♀️
But the reality is, if me and my big strength training energy still have to deal with this BS then we have a long way to go to make the weightroom a place where ALL HUMANS feel safe, empowered, and productive.
🏋🏻‍♀️
To do this we need more education. Women need to learn how to use all the equipment and do all the moves. I guess that’s the mission I’m on right now.
🏋🏻‍♀️
I have some practical thoughts which I will put in another post.
🏋🏻‍♀️
Until then, what ideas do you have about making the weightroom accessible and hospitable for all?🏋🏻‍♀️
