Not all sports physical therapy is the same. 🏃♂️💪

Getting out of pain is important, but if your goal is to get back to running, lifting, training, or competing, sports rehab should go beyond pain relief.

A strong return-to-sport program should focus on:

🎯 Movement control
Rebuilding how your body moves during the actions your sport actually requires.

💪 Strength
Restoring strength in the muscles and joints that need to handle running, jumping, lifting, cutting, or changing direction.

🔄 Retraining movement patterns
Feeling less pain doesn’t automatically mean your body is ready for full-speed sport again. Your movement patterns need to be prepared for those demands too.

🏃 Returning to sport safely
The goal is not just to get you back. It’s to help you return stronger, more confident, and ready to perform.

Tight traps all day, even after stretching? 😣💻

That constant tightness across your neck and shoulders may not mean your traps simply need to be stretched more.

Sometimes, your upper trapezius muscles are working overtime because other muscles around the neck and shoulders are not providing enough support.

That can lead to:

😖 Persistent tightness across the neck and shoulders
💻 Discomfort after long hours at a desk
💪 Traps that constantly feel like they’re “on”
🔄 Temporary relief from stretching, followed by the tightness coming right back

The goal isn’t always to loosen the traps. Sometimes you need to improve how the surrounding muscles work so your traps don’t have to compensate as much.

At Manhattan Physical Therapy, exercises including Redcord-based training can be used to work on muscle activation, stability, and movement control based on what your body needs.

Shoulder pain every time you lift your arms? 💪😣

If reaching overhead, working out, or even getting dressed starts to hurt, your shoulder may be getting overloaded.

A few common contributors include:

💻 Poor posture at your desk
Spending hours rounded forward can change how your shoulders and upper back move.

🧍 Chest tightness
Tight muscles across the front of the chest can make it harder for the shoulder to move freely.

💪 Weakness around the shoulder blades
If the muscles supporting your shoulder aren’t doing enough, other tissues may take on more stress.

A few things that may help:

✅ Pec stretch to open up the front of the chest
✅ Bent-over rows to strengthen the upper back and shoulder blades
✅ Change positions throughout the workday instead of staying rounded forward for hours

The goal isn’t just to avoid lifting your arm. It’s to figure out why the movement hurts and improve the strength and mobility your shoulder needs.

Numbness or tingling in your arm or hand? ⚡🖐️ It may not actually be coming from your arm.

Pins and needles, burning, or numbness can happen when a nerve becomes irritated or compressed somewhere along its pathway.

Here are 3 possible causes:

🧠 1. A pinched nerve in your neck
Irritation of a nerve in the cervical spine can cause symptoms that travel from your neck or shoulder down your arm and into your fingers.

💻 2. Posture and muscle tightness
Spending hours at a desk or computer can contribute to stiffness and tension around the neck and shoulders, which may affect how the area moves and feels.

✋ 3. Nerve compression at the wrist or elbow
Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome or irritation of other nerves around the arm can cause numbness, tingling, or symptoms that radiate into the hand and fingers.

The important part is figuring out where the nerve is being irritated, because treating only the spot where you feel the tingling may not address the actual source.

Top of your foot hurts, but you don’t remember injuring it? 🦶🤔

Foot pain can show up even without a sudden twist, fall, or obvious injury. Sometimes the problem builds gradually from repetitive stress, activity changes, or limited movement elsewhere.

Here are 3 possible causes of pain on top of the foot:

🏃 1. Extensor tendinitis
The tendons that run across the top of your foot can become irritated from overuse, increased activity, or repetitive stress.

⚠️ 2. A stress injury
A sudden increase in walking, running, or training can place more stress on the bones and tissues of the foot, even if there wasn’t one specific moment when you hurt it.

🦶 3. Limited ankle mobility
If your ankle isn’t moving properly, your foot may compensate during walking and other activities, potentially contributing to pain.

If pain on the top of your foot keeps coming back or is starting to make walking around NYC uncomfortable, don’t just keep pushing through it.

Stretching for plantar fasciitis but your heel pain still won’t go away? 🦶😣

You may be doing the right thing, but missing a few important pieces.

Here are 3 common mistakes that can keep plantar fasciitis irritated:

🦵 1. Only stretching your calf
Calf flexibility matters, but don’t forget about the plantar fascia and muscles of the foot itself. Your treatment should address more than one area.

👟 2. Ignoring your footwear
Worn-out shoes, unsupportive footwear, or spending too much time barefoot can continue stressing irritated tissue throughout the day.

🚶 3. Pushing through the pain
Trying to “walk it off” or repeatedly doing painful high-impact activities can keep aggravating the area instead of giving it a chance to recover.

Plantar fasciitis treatment isn’t always as simple as stretch more. If your heel pain has been hanging around for weeks or months, it may be time to figure out what keeps irritating it.

Can’t lift your arm without shoulder pain? 💪😣

Shoulder pain is easy to brush off at first, but when it starts limiting everyday movements or getting worse over time, it may be worth having it evaluated.

Here are 3 signs your shoulder pain deserves attention:

🙋 1. Reaching overhead is difficult
Grabbing something from a high shelf, putting on a shirt, or lifting your arm overhead should not feel increasingly painful or restricted.

🔄 2. You can’t comfortably reach behind your back
Trouble reaching behind you to put on a jacket, fasten clothing, or complete everyday tasks can point to a loss of shoulder mobility.

🌙 3. Your shoulder pain is worse at night
If your shoulder regularly wakes you up or makes it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position, don’t ignore it.

Shoulder pain can come from several different causes, including irritation of the rotator cuff, mobility restrictions, or conditions such as frozen shoulder. The right treatment depends on what is actually causing your symptoms.
