In October 1926, Joseph Pilates opened his first studio at 939 8th Avenue in New York City.

100 years later, we’re opening a new chapter: introducing Green Square Movement Lab | NYC our movement studio for children.

Years of working with adults have taught us how movement patterns can shape the way we feel and function as we grow older. We’ve seen the challenges that can develop over time, and how many of them can be addressed through mindful movement and better movement habits.

Now, we’re bringing that knowledge to the next generation.

At Green Square Movement Lab | NYC we help children develop body awareness, coordination, strength, and healthy movement patterns from an early age.

Because movement education isn’t just about how we move today. It’s about giving our bodies the tools they need for the future.

If you have children, we’d love for you to support our new project and become part of the Green Square Movement Lab | NYC community.

A century of movement. A new generation. A new chapter.

Discover Green Square and book your child’s first class through the link in bio.

What makes a Pilates class structure work best?

We left the question box open, and one of the questions we received was exactly about this.

So Kostya, the founder of our studio, decided to answer it in more detail and share his approach to structuring a Pilates class.

Watch the video and share your own experience in the comments. How do you usually structure your classes?

Our studio is once again a place where new Pilates teachers begin their journey.

And there’s something truly special about that.

Almost 100 years ago, Pilates was developed at 939 8th Avenue. Today, the same space continues to bring together teachers who want to study, practice, and deepen their understanding of the method.

Our new cohort of Polestar Comprehensive Teacher Training has officially started.

A new journey begins here.

The body in autumn. What seasonal change does to movement.

As daylight shortens, melatonin onset occurs earlier and cortisol peaks shift. The nervous system moves toward conservation mode. Cold temperatures increase muscle spindle sensitivity - muscles respond more defensively to stretch.

Injury rates increase in autumn — not just because people return to sport after summer, but because the tissue is literally more reactive than in July. Warming up is not optional in October. It is different in kind from August.

Slow, controlled movement in a temperate environment is especially well-suited to autumn. The nervous system is looking for safety. The method offers it.

What really changes in the body after 40?

Aging is not a single process. Muscle, connective tissue, the nervous system, and bone all adapt differently — and each of them responds to how we move, load, and train.

After 40, recovery may take longer, movement can become less efficient, and maintaining strength and mobility requires more intentional work.

But getting older does not mean becoming weaker or less capable.

The goal is not to fight the aging process. It is to understand it — and train accordingly.

Consistent, intelligent movement can support muscle strength, tissue resilience, bone health, coordination, and long-term physical capacity.

The method matters more after 40, book a session at The Original Pilates Studio 🖤

Your nervous system has two key modes: sympathetic, which prepares you for action, and parasympathetic, which helps your body recover and rest.

Pilates works with both.

Controlled breathing can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and support a shift toward a calmer physiological state. When breathing becomes slower and more controlled, your heart rate and autonomic activity can change with it.

And then there’s cortisol.

Research by Leopoldino et al. (2013) found improvements in sleep quality and quality of life following Pilates practice in a sedentary population.

But there’s another piece people often overlook.

Pilates demands attention. You’re thinking about your breath, alignment, coordination, and precision — not scrolling, multitasking, or replaying the day in your head.

That focused attention can give the mind a break from constant rumination and help create the conditions for winding down.

So when you leave a Pilates session feeling calmer, clearer, and ready for rest — it isn’t necessarily a coincidence.

This isn’t just a side effect.

The connection between breath, movement, attention, and the nervous system is built into the method.

Your future self — and perhaps your sleep tonight — will thank you for it🤍
