There were 672 participants in the 2020 Minnesota State High School League State Wrestling Tournament this weekend. Every one of them has a story and a path that got them to this event. I feel fortunate to have been able to share a significant part of the wrestling portion of the story with three of these young men. Watching them overcome injuries, defeat, setbacks and just normal stuff that comes with being teenagers, I gained respect for each of them.
Athletes come to Southern Minnesota Wrestling Club from many different places, personally and geographically, with a goal of getting to one destination. The common thread that they all must deal with immediately or eventually is that the path to that destination is not an easy one, ever. Wrestling is, always has been, and always will be a tough and difficult sport to master. And, just when you think you have it figured out, it reveals a new layer of challenges, that no matter how hard you thought it would be, you end up wishing it were that easy.
Less than 10% of Minnesota high school wrestlers who start the season in November qualify for the MSHSL State Wrestling Tournament. 3.6% place in the tournament, and .6% are state champions. To purposely choose a path that becomes that narrow the closer you get to your destination is a testament to those who do it. Tonight, a chapter in the lives of three young men will close, and they will wake up tomorrow morning to a new day. Tallin and Eli have chosen to continue their wrestling careers in college and Avery is going into the military. All three can be proud of their accomplishments in the sport of wrestling and use its lessons to help them succeed in whatever comes next.
We wish them the best and thank them for the memories. Getting to watch the final high school matches of each one of them is a memory I will have forever. Thank you!
