Whether you're chasing a mature buck, hoping to fill an antlerless tag, or simply enjoying time in the woods, we hope you have an incredible season.

Hunt safe. Respect the land. Respect the animal. Enjoy the experience.

HUNTER KNOWLEDGE – WEEK #5

WEATHER EFFECTS ON DEER MOVEMENT

Weather can have a noticeable influence on whitetail deer movement, but there isn't one weather condition that guarantees deer will move.

Instead, think about how temperature, wind, pressure, precipitation and changing conditions can affect deer behavior.

COLD FRONT – A drop in temperature, especially after a warmer period, can create more favorable conditions for daytime movement.

WARM WEATHER – During unseasonably warm conditions, deer may spend more time bedded and shift more activity toward cooler parts of the day.

RAIN – Light or moderate rain doesn't necessarily stop deer movement. Deer may continue feeding and traveling, while heavy rain can temporarily reduce activity.

SNOW – Snow can change how deer travel and where they seek food and cover. Fresh snow can also make it easier for hunters to identify recent movement.

WIND – Wind affects how deer use their senses and can influence which routes and bedding areas they feel comfortable using. Always consider wind direction when studying movement.

FOG – Fog can reduce visibility and change how deer perceive their surroundings. It may also make deer more cautious in some situations.

⬆️ HIGH PRESSURE – Often associated with clearer, calmer weather. The conditions following a weather change may be more important than the pressure number itself.

⬇️ LOW PRESSURE – Often accompanies changing or unsettled weather. Deer may alter their activity as conditions change.

THE BIG TAKEAWAY
Don't hunt the weather forecast — hunt the deer and the conditions around them.
Pay attention to what happens before, during and after a weather change.

⚠️ Weather is only one piece of the puzzle. Food, bedding, hunting pressure, time of year, terrain and individual deer behavior all play a role.

What's the best weather you've ever experienced for deer movement?

BEFORE YOU TAKE ANOTHER STEP… STOP.

Here's a scenario every deer hunter hopes they never face.

You make a shot.

The deer runs.

You find a little blood.

Then the blood gets lighter… and eventually disappears.

Now you're tempted to start walking.

WAIT.

If you don't know exactly what happened, continuing to walk through the area may not be your best option.

There is a BIG difference between recovering a deer and pushing a deer.

If you have reason to believe the deer may still be alive:

❌ Don't blindly grid-search the woods.
❌ Don't walk every trail looking for more blood.
❌ Don't bring everyone into the area immediately.
❌ Don't assume the deer couldn't have gone farther.

Instead:

✅ Mark your last blood.
✅ Mark the direction of travel.
✅ Think about the shot and deer behavior.
✅ Back out when appropriate.
✅ Give the deer time.
✅ Call J-See Outdoors Thermal Solutions if you need another set of eyes.

Our thermal drone allows us to search from above while minimizing the amount of ground being disturbed.

Sometimes the best thing a hunter can do is nothing at all for a while.

WHEN IN DOUBT… BACK OUT.

NO BLOOD. NOW WHAT?

You walk to the spot where the deer was standing.

You look around.

Nothing.

Maybe you find a tiny drop of blood… maybe you don't find anything at all.

DON'T PANIC — AND DON'T START PUSHING.

If you aren't confident about the hit, your best move may be to back out and give the deer time.

Start by thinking through the shot:

➡️ Where was the deer standing?
➡️ Where did you hit it?
➡️ What did the deer do immediately afterward?
➡️ Did you hear or see it fall?
➡️ What direction did it travel?

If you're unsure, mark your last known location and back out.

Give the deer time to settle down.

Then consider calling J-See Outdoors Thermal Solutions - (715) 781-4411

A thermal drone can give you another set of eyes from above and search areas that would take a hunter much longer to cover on foot.

And here's something important:

The longer you walk around looking, the more you risk disturbing the area.

WHEN IN DOUBT… BACK OUT.

CALL BEFORE YOU PUSH

You made the shot. You waited. You walked to where you last saw the deer… and now you're not sure what happened.

Before you start walking through the woods looking for blood, remember one thing:

WHEN IN DOUBT… BACK OUT.
PATIENCE RECOVERS DEER.

One of the biggest mistakes a hunter can make after a questionable shot is pushing a deer too soon.

If you have:
- Little or no blood
- A deer that left the area quickly
- Lost sight of the deer
- Uncertainty about the hit
- Difficult terrain or thick cover

STOP. Back out. Give the deer time.

Walking through the area can push a wounded deer farther, making recovery much more difficult.

That's where J-See Outdoors Thermal Solutions can help.

Our thermal drone can search large areas quickly and help locate a downed deer without you spending hours walking through the woods and potentially pushing the animal.

📱 Save our number BEFORE you need it.

When you're standing in the woods wondering what to do next, you don't want to be searching Facebook for a phone number.

CALL BEFORE YOU PUSH.
