👏Congratulations Black Belt Candidates!

Saturday was our May 2026 Black Belt Pre-Test. The day started off with a timed 2-mile run at the New Providence high school track. Then it was back to MAFL for push-ups, sit-ups, kickboxing, self-defense, pad work and 10+ rounds of sparring (including a 3 vs.1 match and padded stick sparring for Miss Carly, our third degree candidate.)👊

Congratulations to our Black Belt candidates who successfully completed pre-testing today. For our candidates that didn't make it this go round - we'll get 'em next time! We have 12 first degree candidates and 1 third degree candidate for our final
performance and graduation this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Thank you to all of our MAFL students, instructors and families who supported our candidates and helped with the prep-cycle and pre-test process. Special thanks to our team who helped out with pre-testing, Mr. Aidan E., Miss Emily and Miss Ava for all their help with the pre-testing process. Special thanks to all our students who came in to spar with the candidates. Team work makes the dream work!

🏔️One more hill to climb! Final performance and graduation next Saturday! Best of luck to all our Black Belt candidates on their test!

🔥Training With G**o Dan Inosanto

I had a great time training in Atlanta this weekend with G**o Dan Inosanto — and getting to share some of that experience with my son made it even more special.

In Filipino Martial Arts, “G**o” means teacher. And at 89 years old, G**o Inosanto is still out there doing what he’s done for decades: teaching, refining, and passing on a living piece of martial arts history.

G**o’s perspective is truly unique — he trained with (and was certified under) pioneers like Bruce Lee and Ed Parker, and he shares firsthand lessons, stories, and details you simply can’t get anywhere else.

I’ve been training with G**o since 2011, and being promoted as an instructor under him in Kali and Jeet Kune Do has been one of the greatest honors of my martial arts journey. I’m grateful for every opportunity to keep learning at a high level — and to bring those lessons back to our students here at Martial Arts for Life.

Sunday training with Coach Erik Paulson. 👊

(For anyone who doesn’t know him: Sensei Erik Paulson is one of the pioneers of mixed martial arts + modern kickboxing and submission grappling, and the founder of Combat Submssion Wrestling & STX Kickboxing.)

We’re big believers that great coaching never stops learning. We go out, train at a high level, pressure-test what we teach, and bring those lessons back to our students.

Last night I caught a small moment after class that stuck with me.

One of our teenage helpers knelt down and told a younger student: “You’re close — just a few more classes and a little more practice for your next stripe.”

No harshness. No pressure. Just empathy, kindness, and encouragement.

I was proud of how she handled it — and it reminded me how much the way we coach kids matters. They’re not just learning skills. They’re learning how to handle setbacks, how to keep going, and how to treat people.

Also… if you ever want proof that teenagers do have patience, give them a 7-year-old with big feelings and a belt stripe goal.
Teens can be incredible role models when they’re given the chance.
