To Dolly, The Woman Who Taught Us That Joy Was the Point

I am so heartbroken to hear the news that Dolly Parton has died. She was 80, and she passed peacefully in Nashville. Even knowing she had been navigating her health this past year, the world feels a little quieter today, a little less lit up. She belonged to everyone, and so this loss feels strangely personal to a great many of us at once.

I write in this space mostly about the nervous system. About movement, regulation, and the slow work of learning to feel safe inside a body. Dolly Parton might seem like an unexpected subject for that conversation. But the longer I sit with her legacy, the more I see a woman who understood, intuitively and without a single textbook, something my whole field has spent decades trying to name.

She understood that JOY was not a reward waiting at the end of the healing. Joy was part of the path itself. JOY was the purpose of life.

The world has a habit of treating joy as frivolous. Something you earn once the serious work is done. Dolly never made that mistake. Her whole presence was an argument for delight, for color, for laughter at her own expense, for taking up space without apology.

From a nervous system perspective, this matters more than it might seem. Genuine play and delight move us toward a ventral vagal state, the physiological place where we feel safe enough to connect, to create, and to rest. It is not a luxury layered on top of wellbeing. It is part of how wellbeing is built. Dolly Parton lived in that state, visibly and generously, and she kept inviting the rest of us in. Dolly was pure JOY.

What moved people about her was rarely only the music. It was the sense of being met without judgment. She spoke openly about growing up in poverty, about faith, about doubt, about the parts of herself she had made peace with. She did all of it without ever making anyone else feel small.

That is co-regulation on a scale most of us never witness. When a person models warmth and steadiness, the systems around them borrow from that steadiness. Something in us settles. I think millions of people felt a little safer in the world simply because Dolly Parton was in it, and I do not say that lightly. She was my hero too.

Then there are the children. Inspired by her own father, who could neither read nor write, Dolly founded her Imagination Library in 1995 and went on to place hundreds of millions of books into the hands of children who might otherwise have had none. My children received and read multiple of her free books over the years. Dolly understood that literacy was never only about words. It was about a child feeling that the world had something waiting for them, chosen just for them, arriving every month like a small promise kept.

She took her own hardship and turned it into generosity rather than bitterness. That is its own kind of wisdom. Not the bright bypassing that asks us to skip over pain, but the slower work of metabolizing hardship into something that goes on to feed other people. Love offered freely, again and again, as a way of living.

So today I grieve her, the way so many of us do. She embodied the very things I spend my working life helping people find their way back toward. Joy that is allowed. Love that is offered without conditions. The steady belief that every child deserves to feel the world is for them.

Rest well, Dolly. You touched more nervous systems than you will ever know, and mine is one of them. I will always love you.
