Every year, when the marigolds come back and the candles are lit, I set a place for my father.

Jimmy San Martín worked with the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, and he loved that land with his whole heart. He made sure his children knew it too... the colors, the markets, the food, the way the living keep a seat at the table for the ones who've gone ahead. That is where my love of Día de los Mu***os was born. That is where I was shaped.

He loved fiambre, and now I make it at my own table. Every time I do, he's right there with me.

I am honored, and truly moved, to share this story in French Quarter Journal's Land of the Spirits special issue. Thank you, Ellis Anderson, for giving my father's memory a home on these pages.

This one is for you, Papi.
