Every week we see the same thing. Someone buys a two or three hundred dollar e-bike from an overseas website because money is tight and they need transportation fast. I understand the need. But almost no one understands the real risks.
These ultra-cheap imports often use questionable electronics, uncertified batteries, weak welds, and substandard components. When the motor or controller fails, there are no replacement parts. No shop in New Orleans will repair them. When the frame cracks, there is no warranty. And if someone gets hurt because the bike failed, there is no company in the United States to stand behind it. The seller is overseas and insulated from all responsibility.
People think they are saving money. What they actually get is a multi-hundred-dollar paperweight or a ride that can put them in the hospital.
There are safer options, even for riders with bad credit or no credit at all.
In less than two weeks, we are launching a new leasing program that will allow virtually anyone to qualify for a brand new UL safety certified e-bike. If something breaks under normal use, it is covered under the lease. Bring the bike back and we repair it at no cost to you. No gambling on dangerous equipment. No getting stuck with something no shop will touch. You get reliable transportation you can count on.
For riders who are on a tight budget, Blue Bikes is also an option. It is not perfect, but it is safe, maintained locally, and backed by a real service team.
If you or someone you know is thinking about buying a bargain e-bike online because it is only three or four hundred dollars, please talk with a real shop first. We want people riding something safe, repairable, and supported long term, not something that fails the moment they need it most.
