When trauma shows up as irritability, relationships can feel the strain.

After trauma, the body’s alarm system can remain on high alert. Everyday stress, a disagreement, or an unexpected change may feel overwhelming. This can show up as snapping, defensiveness, withdrawing, or difficulty feeling close to others.

Loved ones may feel rejected or find themselves walking on eggshells. The person experiencing trauma may feel misunderstood, exhausted, or guilty about their reactions.

Trauma can help explain a reaction. We are still responsible for how we treat others.

A healthier response starts with:

• Recognizing early signs of tension, such as a tight jaw or racing heart.
• Taking a pause before responding—and agreeing on when to return to the conversation.
• Saying, “I’m overwhelmed and need a moment,” instead of lashing out.
• Taking responsibility and repairing hurt after conflict.
• Seeking therapy when these patterns keep affecting daily life.

You can learn to recognize triggers, manage reactions, and build healthier connections.

Compulsive Video Surveillance: When Online Monitoring Becomes Obsessive

Dr. Aliza Vinson of Regaining Life Balance has coined the term Compulsive Video Surveillance (CVS) to describe the repetitive monitoring of another person’s digital presence.

This behavior may include:

• Repeatedly checking when someone appears online
• Tracking how long that person remains active
• Comparing their online activity with unanswered calls or messages
• Becoming angry or agitated when they do not respond
• Using digital activity to question, confront, or control them

This is not simply concern or curiosity. It is a pattern of compulsive monitoring characterized by fixation, hypervigilance, entitlement to access, and disregard for interpersonal boundaries.

A person’s online visibility does not create an obligation to communicate. Being available on Facebook does not mean someone owes anyone immediate personal access.

Online access does not equal personal access.

Compulsive Video Surveillance is a descriptive behavioral term coined by Dr. Vinson; it is not currently recognized as a formal psychiatric diagnosis.
