In Chinese the words for 'fish' and 'abundance' are homophones. This formation challenges the dancers to collect the red envelopes in a specific order and then use them to write out the characters 年 年 有 餘 (nián nián yǒu yú) while underneath the lion, thereby writing the common idiom "May you have abundance year after year," which is revealed to the audience as the lion stands up.

This being our third year performing for the museum, the only lion we had yet to bring along was Zhang Fei, the youngest of the three sworn brothers. There's a misconception that dancing with a black lion is bad luck, when in fact Zhang Fei's boundless energy and intimidating looks can drive off the evilest of spirits and the worst of luck. He's commonly referred to as The Fighting Lion.

Many thanks to Fairfield HamletHub for the video.
