You should always know your abilities, have the required safety equipment and registration, and use available tools like weather apps and flow meter reading from the USGS to gauge conditions. Here's a new one on the Cuyahoga River Water Trail. Staying safe helps you enjoy your paddling experience. The Cuyahoga River is a fabulous river for a variety of recreation paddling trips with scenic river sections, the urban kayaking experience in Cleveland connected to our great Lake Erie, and many miles in our Cuyahoga Valley National Park!

Have you noticed the new signs on the Cuyahoga River Water Trail? The Cuyahoga River Conditions Tool, or “CUYAC” (pronounced kayak), puts near real-time condition reports into the hands of visitors before they enter the water. The City of Akron developed the tool and has funded the first signs to be shared amongst the water trail partners.

The system shares a risk level by color:
🔵 Teal – means lower risk conditions. Those accessing the river should still use caution and stay alert for hazards but conditions are generally favorable.
🟡 Yellow – means high risk conditions exist. The weather, low/high flow conditions, and/or temperatures are causing a heightened risk to those who access the river and caution should be exercised.
🟠 Orange – means extreme risk. The river conditions are hazardous, and it is best not to enter the waterway and to keep your distance from the bank.

CUYAC signs are installed at Kinsman Road, White Oaks, Tony Sainato Memorial Canoe Launch, Brust Park, Northampton Point River Access and the Valley View Area of Cascade Valley Metro Park.

Please note: This tool should not replace an assessment of risk based on an individual’s skill, experience, competence and comfort level with constantly changing conditions of the natural environment. Risk of injury or death remains inherent under all conditions. A personal flotation device (life jacket) is always recommended. In every scenario, users enter the river at their own risk.

The Sippo Valley Trail is looking for a little help. Trail improvements help us all and the Sippo Valley Trail is also an ambassador of Ohio to many out of state visitors with its position as part of the Ohio to Erie Trail. Running between Dalton and Massillon, the 10 mile trail is worthy destination for your shorter rides, too!

RAIL-TO-TRAILS OF WAYNE COUNTY ANNOUNCES FUND DRIVE TO RESURFACE THE SIPPO VALLEY Ohio to Erie Trail

The Sippo Valley Trail was the first trail developed by Rails-to-Trails of Wayne County. It is approximately 2.5 miles of paved trail from Freet Street in Dalton to the Wayne County line. There it crosses into Stark County and continues to Massillon where it connects with the Ohio and Erie Towpath Trail. The trail sections were originally paved in 1998 and 1999 and need some repair and resurfacing work so that the trail can continue to serve Ohioans for many years to come.

Rails-to-Trails of Wayne County has been partnering with the Village of Dalton since 2023 to secure a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation to resurface the trail. This project includes resurfacing of the trail and the parking lot at West Lebanon Road. The bridges will also be evaluated and repaired as needed.

This is a very ambitious project, estimated to cost $1,681,062. This includes engineering costs as well as the bridge repair and resurfacing of the trail and parking lot. A grant of $1,293,124 has been secured for this project, with the local share to be provided by donations.

We need your help to make this project possible.

We have a very tight schedule to be able to comply with the fiscal year requirements of the grant. Our goal is to raise a total of $260,000 to cover engineering and other upfront costs. So far, we have saved $69,259 for this project and need to raise an additional $191,000.

This will need to happen in the months of July and August so that this engineering can begin in September.

Do you want a fun an unique way to view Big Boy heading back? Watch from the water (safely off to the side) from a kayak! 41 North Coastal Adventures on the Rocky River is an option. Coming through on 7/13, heading to the West.

Big Boy 4014 returns! Tomorrow! Approximately 1:00pm the steam locomotive will pass over the Rocky River in prime view of our rental craft.

Act fast, there are still some kayaks/paddleboards remaining for that time!

We have the #1 metropolitan park system in the land and the #1 state park system. We have the most bike trail miles in the country! We have a major hiking trail encircling our state - completely within Ohio - and lots of other trails in our great parks! It's Summer - get out on your adventure!
