The NKHS Varsity Volleyball team won three of four sets in their scrimmage against the Mustangs of Mechanicsville HS on Tuesday, August 20. In the first set, the Lady Trojans rallied from a 10-point deficit behind the serving of opposite Ava Nieto to win 25-23. Mechanicsville prevailed in set two, taking an 8-point lead in their first rotation and went on to win the set 25-13. In the third set, the Lady Trojans held an 11-7 lead when middle hitter Leah Rounds came up to serve and ran off seven points to put New Kent up 18-7. The Mustangs only managed one more point before the Lady Trojans closed the match with a score of 25-8. In the final set of the match, New Kent was down 16-22 before outscoring the Mustangs 11-3 to win set four 27-24.
The Lady Trojan JV team won all three scrimmage sets against a young Mechanicsville team with only two returning players.
Both New Kent teams will play their final preseason contests this Saturday, August 24th, at the Manchester HS Jamboree in Midlothian, VA. Both teams start at 8:00 am and will play four two-set matches. Admission is $10 with kids six and under free.

Congratulations to Aubrey Hyndshaw, who was named the NKHS Female Athlete of the Year for 2023 for her years of success in volleyball and basketball. Also pictured is her mother, Jamie Hyndshaw, who received a Trojan award for serving as the scorekeeper for the varsity volleyball team for five seasons.

The Lady Trojan varsity volleyball team recorded a 4-1 record in the middle division of the Endless Summer Tournament in Virginia Beach on Saturday, September 17. New Kent's only loss was to Westover Christian of Danville in their first match of the day, a contest that went to 14-16 in the third set. The Lady Trojans finished 2-1 in pool play, defeating Class 5 teams Kempsville of VA Beach and Indian River of Chesapeake, but Westover finished 2-1 also and got the berth in the gold playoff bracket by virtue of their first match win over New Kent. New Kent went on to win their playoff bracket defeating Currituck County High School and Albemarle School of Elizabeth City to finish the tournament in fourth place in the 12-team IIb Division. There were 98 girls and boys varsity and JV teams in the tournament.

The New Kent Lady Trojan varsity stunned Grafton, ranked #3 in the state by Max Preps, by taking multiple leads in the first set of tonight's Bay Rivers District match. While Grafton eventually won in straight sets, New Kent finished within 4 points to Grafton 21-25 in the first set. In the second set, Grafton took an early lead at 1-5, then 3-10 and 4-13. New Kent closed to 7-14, but that was the last points the Lady Trojans would score in the set which ended with Grafton dominating New Kent 7-25. The third set say ties at 1-1 and 3-3, before Grafton opened up a 3-8 lead. However, the Lady Trojans fought tenaciously, closing to 11-12 before Grafton managed another run which to14-21. New Kent managed 3 points to Grafton's 4, but the lead was too much to overcome, with Grafton winning 17-25.

The Lady Trojan varsity volleyball team duplicated its five-set sweep of Southampton in tonight's scrimmage against Class 1 Mathews. The pre-season scrimmage against Mathews has been a New Kent tradition for at least 15 years and for much of that time Mathews, who won three state championships in the past 10 years, has been a worthy opponent. Last year Mathews graduated eight seniors while New Kent graduated nine and the results indicated that Mathews is taking a little longer to get the new squad back to form than New Kent. Standouts for New Kent included sophomore Fallon Greenawalt who recorded 7 kills and Juniors Kaleigh Redman and Lexie Powell who recorded 5 and 4 kills respectively. New Kent plays its first regular season match on August 30 at home against Bruton.

The New Kent Lady Trojans varsity and JV teams will scrimmage the Blue Devils of Mathews tonight, Wed, Aug 17 at 5:30. The varsity match will take place at Mathews HS while the JVs will play at Thomas Hunter Middle School.
