Before there was a Civic Arena, Pittsburgh's premier indoor sports venue was a converted streetcar barn in Oakland. And it was extraordinary.
Duquesne Garden opened in 1890 as a Pittsburgh Railways streetcar storage facility and was converted into a multi-purpose arena in 1895. The cavernous barrel-vaulted interior that had sheltered hundreds of streetcars became a hockey rink, a boxing venue, a basketball arena, and a concert hall that hosted everyone from Sousa to the circus.
The Pittsburgh Hornets played hockey there. The Pittsburgh Ironmen played basketball there. Six-day bicycle races ran continuously through the building for a week at a time.
It was demolished in 1956 to build an apartment complex. Oakland lost something irreplaceable and barely noticed in the middle of the urban renewal decade.
The building that replaced it is forgettable. The Garden was not.

While the Kingerski’s were not a Highlands Hockey family, they were a pillar of the hockey community at Pittsburgh Ice Arena (Valley Sports Complex).

Ryan was often found on the ice (along with his twin brother Jacob) helping his Dad (Tim) run drills for the younger players and sharing his love of the game.

As our youth dek hockey league kicks off this week at Memorial Park, we're looking for donations of gently used equipment to help our young players get started. If you have any extra sticks, gloves, helmets, or other gear, now’s the perfect time to give them a second life on the dek!

We will be at the Dek tomorrow from 10 AM to 11 AM to collect donations. Your generosity will go a long way in supporting the next generation of dek hockey players! 🖤💛
