🚀 The Final Week of Classes at the Sports Equity Youth Scholars Program!

Our inaugural cohort has now completed the lecture portion of the program! This week, Scholars explored sport psychology, AI, safeguarding, integrity, leadership, student-athlete life, and the role of sport in building stronger communities.

📚 The lectures may be over, but the Scholars' work continues! Over the next couple of weeks, they will complete their independent research projects with the mentorship from Noemi Zaharia and Anna Semenova.
The program will culminate in a final mini-conference, where our Scholars will present their research findings!

🚀 The July Portion of the Sports Equity Youth Scholars Program Has Concluded!
As our inaugural cohort completed the July portion of the program, our Scholars continued exploring some of the biggest questions in global sport, from the economics of the Olympic Games to equity and inclusion, and the role of international sport governing bodies.
✨ This week, our Scholars learned from:
🔹 Sandra Kirby, Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of Winnipeg and Olympian in rowing, who shared a lifetime of experiences navigating equity challenges in sport.
🔹 Jan Steinmüller, Member Relations Coordinator at World Athletics, who introduced Scholars to the work of the global governing body for track and field.
🔹 Cristian Zaharia, Director of International Sport Business Development at United States Sports University and Olympic handball player, who explored the financial realities of hosting the Olympic Games.
📚 Beyond the guest sessions, our Scholars reached an exciting milestone by completing the first stage of their independent research projects: a literature review. Their research projects explore a diverse range of important topics, including athletes' mental health during career transition, safeguarding and coach-athlete dynamics, mental health support structures in sport organizations, and the challenges surrounding doping in sport.

We're incredibly proud of how much our Scholars have accomplished over the past several weeks. As they continue developing their research projects, we're excited to see their ideas grow into meaningful contributions to the future of sport.

🚀 The Sports Equity Youth Scholars Program continues!
Five weeks in, our inaugural cohort is diving deeper into the many dimensions of sport through inspiring conversations with leading researchers and practitioners from around the world.
✨ Over the past two weeks, our Scholars learned from:
🔹 Harry Grimes, Doctoral Researcher at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), who explored the current state of anti-doping research and its key challenges.
🔹 Lewis Murapa, Academy Sports Psychologist at Manchester United FC (UK), who shared insights into the role of a sports psychologist in a professional football academy.
🔹 Eric Reveno (Eric Reveno), James C. Gaither Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach/General Manager at Stanford, who discussed the science and art of being a great teammate.
🔹 Irina Zelenkova (Irina Zelenkova Ученый №1 в мире по гипоксии,врач спортсменов), World-Record Mountaineering Coach, who shared inspiring stories—including lessons from her world-record Everest ascent—on pushing beyond perceived limits.
🔹 Noemi Zaharia, 2x Olympic Medalist in Swimming and Associate Professor at United States Sports University, who explored gender differences in the leadership skills of Olympic athletes.
🔹 Joel Seickell, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Aston Villa Football Club (English Premier League), who discussed the practical realities of advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion in professional sport clubs.

The Sports Equity Youth Scholars Program is officially underway!

Three weeks in, our inaugural cohort has already taken its first exciting steps into the world of sports research.
So far, our Scholars have:
• Learned about the Sports Equity Lab's mission and how a research lab operates.
• Explored the foundations of sports equity and chose their research topics
• Developed practical research skills, including literature searching, academic presentation, and discussions on sport integrity and barriers to sport participation.

"Over the past few weeks since joining the Sports Equity Lab, I have learned so many new interesting things, including how to find reliable sources, what sports equity actually is, fairness in sport, and much more. It was fun getting to know everyone, and I really enjoyed the guest speaker sessions so far. I look forward to what's coming next!"

Congratulations to our Athlete Council members (Artistic Swim), (Track & Field) and (Women's Basketball) for receiving the Spirit of Stanford Award!

This award is dedicated to student-athletes who are exemplary teammates and embody the values of Stanford University by being effective leaders across campus and in the community.

Just like the Stanford community has seen their impact in such a large way, we are honored to say the same. We are extremely grateful to have bright individuals advising the work of Sports Equity Lab as we strive to improve the landscape of sport at Stanford and around the world. They each have great paths ahead, and we are thrilled to be a part of it.

📣 We're launching the Sports Equity Youth Scholars Summer Program!

Are you a high schooler passionate about sports, equity, and research? The Sports Equity Lab is accepting applications for a unique 9-week online research experience designed exclusively for ambitious students from around the world. 🌍

Work alongside world-class researchers, contribute to real sports equity projects, and earn a certificate from the Sports Equity Lab—all from wherever you are!

🤔 What you'll gain: Mentorship from SEL scholars, practical skills in data collection and academic writing, and a global network of peers.

🔍 What we're looking for: Motivated, curious students passionate about sports. No prior research experience needed—just drive and intellectual curiosity!

💲 Tuition: $3,000. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available for highly motivated students.
