SEASON KICKS OFF WITH A BANG!!!!
What a busy and exciting first weekend of the season! We are so proud of the performances the girls turned in against some very strong tournament fields. First, on Saturday in the Lady Rocket Classic (Shelby Co.HS) @ Weissinger Hills we finished with a team total of 367...good for a tie for 7th place out of 19 teams. We were led by Sarah Son's 84 and Carly Clements' 90 on a tough course setup. Then today, at the LadyCat Invitational (Henry Co.HS) @ Henry Co. Country Club, the girls topped Saturday's effort with a team total 362 (5th place out of 12 teams). Sarah and Abby Stivers led the team with fantastic scores of 81 & 82 on their home course.

A few success stories to point out about this weekend's events that make it even more impressive to us as coaches--
#1-We beat our best 18-hole team score (410) from last year by 43 and 48 strokes over the two days. #2-Today, we beat last years LadyCat Invit. score by 56 strokes! #3-Sarah's 81 and Abby's 82 today were career low scores for their high school career! #4 On Saturday, Delaney Wilson shot her lowest 18-hole tourney score ever (99). #5-Sarah Son was named to the all-tourney team today for her 81 (10 lowest indiv. scores) and Abby just missed being joining her for All-Tourney honors by 1 stroke.

As a team we were solid from top-to-bottom and the consistency we got from our first 3 players in both events really turned some heads. The sky is the limit for this team and we are starting to see the fruits of our labors. It is truly shaping up to be an exciting season for the 2013 Lady Centurion Golf Team! Way to go girls! We are very proud of you!

The team/season highlights video is finished (except for a few minor tweaks) and almost ready for the Team Banquet at the Wilson's Sunday night! It was great to see all the great/funny moments of the season again while making the video. It will hopefully be a memorable finale to a great season...see you all there!!!!!

Congratulations to all for exceeding goals and finishing strong! Thanks for the true team effort from the players, assitant coach, and especially the help/cooperation of the parents. Providing hospitality bags, transportation, and help with concessions is all deeply appreciated.

CAL GIRLS GOLF UPDATE: VICTORIOUS AGAIN!!!!
As the season winds down to an end, the girls are continuing their winning ways with 2 more match victories this week. Here are the details for those who didn't see Coach Tom's email updates last night and Tuesday night.

Thurs, Sept 13 @ Hidden Creek Golf Club
CAL (180) defeats PRESENTATION (192)...CAL now 11-0-1!
We returned to one of our favorite courses yesterday for the match against Pres and came away with another big win after finishing in a tie for 3rd with them in Monday's Jeff. Co. Girls Invitational. CAL started off on fire and kept up the heat for the entire round. Abby Stivers shot a career best 38 for our team low score, playing the course at even par thru the first seven holes. Sarah Son's stellar 42 added fuel to the fire and included 3 pars in a row capped by a birdie on the par 5 ninth hole. Carly Clements' 46, despite an injury, was crucial in insuring the win. Delaney Wilson continued her strong play with a 54, rebounding nicely after a rough start on holes 1 & 2.

Tuesday, Sept 11 Shawnee Golf Course
CAL (193) defeats MANUAL (221) to get our 10th win!
One of the more fun matches of the season playing against the super-friendly girls from Manual, but despite the fun, CAL was all business in guarding our undefeated record. Once again, we posted 3 scores in the 40's to seal the win...led by Abby Stivers/44, Sarah Son/46, and Carly Clements/48. Emily Neat returned to form with a solid 55. Game ball of the day though went to sophomore McKenzie Robinson, who played in her first varsity match. Congrats CAL and congratulations Kenzie!

This team is peaking as we head into Sacred Heart's Bunny Daugherty Invitational at Hurstborne Country Club on Saturday. It appears to be a very strong field and we are looking forward to the challenge as we prepare for Regionals on the 24th. Just one more match remains (Tues. vs KCD) in the season. Good luck girls!

3rd PLACE FINISH in JEFFERSON COUNTY INVITATIONAL!!!!
The girls kept up the great play yesterday and posted a 186 (our newest low total) to claim a tie for 3rd place in the JCI, competing against a field of 12 Metro Louisville girls teams. We had 4 girls shoot in the 40's and narrowly missed 2nd place by 2 strokes! A tremendous showing in one of the more important events we play in. We were led in scoring by Sarah Son's 45. Delaney Wilson "brought it" yesterday and posted a career low 46, followed by Carly with a 47 and Erika with a 48. It was a great team effort and it was neat to see people looking at the final scoreboard and noticing CAL up there at the top. I even overheard several remarks from coaches and spectators commenting on on our strong finish and the balanced scores we posted, by far the post consistent team score in the tournament. CONGRATULATIONS on a great tourney and for "turning heads!"...let's ride this momentum right into regionals!

ANOTHER BIG CAL GOLF DAY! The girls travelled to Hidden Creek today to play in the Christian Academy of Indiana Invitational and brought home a bunch of hardware! It was a tough day at times on a waterlogged course that played long and very difficult, but our girls persevered and ended up winning FIRST PLACE TEAM! It was a smaller field than most events, but the competition was still quite tough. Abby led the way with overall 2nd Place Individual (93), Sarah placed 3rd with a 94, Carly 5th with a 104, and Emily 10th place with a 122. So proud of the way everyone played through the rough stretches and finished strong. Way to go girls! You should all be very proud and excited to contribute the first golf trophy to the CAL trophy case in at least 5 years! Let's build on this and bring our best effort to the Jefferson County Invitational on Monday and show the folks on this side of the river that CAL GOLF IS ON THE RISE!!!!!

THIS WEEKS UPDATE: 9-0-1 and STILL ROLLING!
Another weeks worth of matches in the books and 2 more wins penciled in! The girls rebounded strong from last weeks tied match with Mercy with some great play and big wins this week.

TUESDAY: CAL (140) defeats Collegiate (144) @ Seneca. Thanks to a great effort down the stretch, we came away with another close win, this time over Collegiate. Three scores were counted in this match and Sarah Son led us in scoring with a solid 42, followed by Abby's 47, Erika's 51 and a great effort by Emily.

THURSDAY: CAL (189) defeats Louisville Male (215) @ Iroquois. If not our biggest win of the year, it was certainly one of our most complete matches. Male also entered the match undefeated on the season, but our best 4 scores were just too much for them in this one. Our 189 total was our lowest in at least 4 seasons and was the result of a total team effort. We placed 3 scores in the 40's (Sarah S. 45, Carly 46, Abby 47) and Delaney added one of her best 9's of the season with a 51. Congrats to all the girls on a great round, but especially to Delaney and Jess Skaggs. Delaney exceeded Coach Tom's challenge to shoot in the mid-50's in this match by turning in one of her most consistent performances in a varsity match to date. Also huge props to Jess for competing in her first varsity match in a challenging environment. Her foursome probably had the biggest gallery following them all day, a daunting and intimidating challenge for your first time out...but Jess kept her head up and kept smiling, representing her team well and showing great improvement since the beginning of the season! This was a fun match to watch as several of the girls played with familiar faces from Male...the chatter was almost as entertaining as the golf!

So...we're now 9-0-1 and heading into a busy weekend and week next week. On Saturday we'll compete in the Christian Academy of Indiana Invitational at Hidden Creek (Abby, Carly, Sarah S. and Emily), followed by the Jefferson County Invitational at Shawnee on Monday, and two more big matches on Tues/Thursday. Be sure to wish these girls luck as we head down the home-stretch into regionals. They are really starting to confirm our belief as coaches that our team can truly be a top-3 team in the Louisville Area and in our region for the next several years. Keep up the hard work girls! You are making us proud!

TODAY'S CAL GOLF TOURNAMENT UPDATE:
Bullitt East Lady Charger Invitational
@ Glenmary Country Club.

Ok, I could give you a lengthy, thought-out recap today's action, but I've decided to break it down into simple numbers this time. Too tired to write! So here goes...

7.5 - the number of hours it took to play todays tourney
32 - the cost ($) of a spectator cart rental (yeah, no kidding)
0 - the number of spectator carts available for CAL fans
342 - the number of times I wished I had a cart
8 - the cost of a turkey sandwich in the clubhouse
15 - the number of times I wished I had that $8 sandwich
26.2 - the number of miles it felt like we walked today
17 - the number of holes that seemed uphill
20 - teams in the event
112 - total golfers in the event
85 - CAL's low individual score (Abby Stivers)
19 - Abby's individual score rank (out of 112 golfers)
3 - number of CAL players breaking 100 today (Sarah 97, Carly 99 + Abby) GREAT JOB!
410 - CAL's team score today (our best yet)
11 - CAL's team finish (out of 20 teams...our best yet)

VERY, VERY PROUD of our girls (Abby, Carly, Sarah S, and Emily) today for such a great "marathon" effort on a tough course. You can see from the photo of half of the scoreboard that we fared very well against the competition today. We continue to show improvement every time we take to the course...our 7-0 match record also supports that fact...and the girl's positive words and actions, even when they're tired and struggling, are impacting their playing partners. Way to go girls! Great job today!
