Michigan is home to more than 13,400 miles of state-designated trails that offer something for everyone – there’s a reason we’re known as The Trails State – and this summer, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants to hear what trail visitors have to say about their experiences biking, hiking, track-chair operating, paddling, horseback riding, off-road vehicle riding and snowmobiling these pathways. The 2024 Michigan Trails Experience Survey is open now through Aug. 1.

At long last, the first stage of the Calumet Trail reconstruction is slated to begin Monday morning, April 15th from Mineral Springs Road to State Road 49. The project involves raising the grade of the trail and asphalt paving, with numerous culverts installed to alleviate flooding issues. This will continue eastward to the La Porte County line over the next two years. Once completed, the new trail will be renamed the Marquette Greenway.

TOMORROW in New Buffalo! This starts the first Michigan phase of the Marquette Greenway. Constructed this year includes the trailhead at N. Smith and W. Mechanic Streets in downtown New Buffalo, sidewalks along Mechanic Street and a 10-foot-wide paved path along US12 from Willard Street to the Grand Beach/US12 intersection. The Phase 1 project will include land in New Buffalo City, New Buffalo Township and Grand Beach Village with the project lead being the Berrien County Road Department. The project engineer is Abonmarche and the contractor is Kalin Construction. Phase 2 of the Michigan portion of the trail from the IN/MI state line to the Intersection of US12 and Grand Beach Road is in the engineering phase and construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
