Yesterday we had some guests from out of town for some surprise belt promotions.
Dr. Jude Bowman who is one of my instructors from our original school in Wheeling, Zachary Therrien a former student and Black Belt from my time teaching at the Wheeling school, and Matt Vinka who earned his Brown Belt at the school in Wheeling.

The wheeling location closed after my main instructor and fonder of SOTA suffered a stroke a few years ago and Zach started teaching at his own location shortly after.

Our instructor and I had discussed promoting him to second degree black and promoting Matt to Black Belt. We decided it would be more meaningful to them if he signed their certificates and Jude and I presented them.
Unfortunately Leonard Rycerz Jr. passed away shortly after signing the certificates.
We kept the arrangement secret until the time was right. Yesterday we had the honor of not only a well deserved and overdue promotion for these two individuals, but also presenting them with something they thought they would never receive.
A signed certificate from a long time mentor who passed away months ago.
In addition to the certificate we presented Matt with one of the last blackbelts that was left in inventory at the Wheeling location when it closed.

Prior to to this we also promoted several students from our classes at the YMCA in new Brighton.
Congrats to Hector, Alejandra, Anna, TJ, and Carlin.
