Lori Nelson Candidate for school board.

Lori Nelson Candidate for school board. As a candidate for the Mercer county School Board, I am asking for your vote on April 4th.

04/01/2025

April 1 Election Day!

What does that mean?

It is a democratic experience. The day you have a voice and a vote for things that matter.

Please vote!

There are many local races particularly mayor/alderman decisions around the county.

Also a decision on the school district 4O4 area referendum.

This was my position.

When the first vote came for board action it was to approve the architect to draw plans and produce renderings for an improved high school. If I remember correctly I was the only one that voted no. I was heavily criticized for that. I was new to the board and it was discounted as lack if knowledge on my part. In reality the reasoning behind that vote was I knew that process would be in the financial area of about a quarter million dollars and I thought we should get the blessing of the community first.

2nd I made motion to allow the decision to go to referendum. There were only 6 board members present so it was a tie vote and did not pass due to the tie.

3rd. Vote to issue the bond. Once again if I remember correctly I was the only one to vote no. I firmly believe in community stakeholders being involved in this big of a decision.

4th Petition to stop the bond. I was supportive of this as it was a petition to allow the voters to decide.

5th. Vote by the board to place decision on the ballot. Passed

6th forums I attended all three of these. All of these were presented in similar fashion with an entirely different environment and feel.

Campaigns: You will have received post cards, seen signs and heard many radio ads. None of this was put out by the school. This was a yes supporting campaign and privately paid for.

Social media: Lots if information was being shared on social media. Some true some false. Also much concern of misleading information including IF and HOPE.
It is what it is.

Today is the day. We will know what the community decides.

Get out and VOTE!

03/22/2025

Good morning there is presently a referendum on the ballot. The community will be deciding if we do a 28 million dollar project at the high school.

My position is this. I will not be supporting a yes or no vote. I will be neutral until I step behind the curtain as a tax payer.

The reason for this is there are legal rules for school board members as what we can and cannot do. IIf I am committed B it gets easy to violate that law. I believe I was elected to study understand and support the kids and the community.

This does not mean that I will not try to in correct misinformation or answer questions. What I support is TRUST.
The Community, staff and students must know they can trust the Board of Education to make mindful, knowledgeable decisions.

The students and staff need better facilities.
The community needs to have a limit as to what is financially expected of them.

Both sides in a nutshell.

Respectfully serving,
Lori Nelson

I am officially committed to being a circulator of the petition for the school.

What does that mean to you?

It means that as a community we can begin to have a voice in what happens in our school district. If you would like a voice——if you would like to vote for or against a 25 million dollar bond, I am now an active circulator!

As it sits right now a bond hearing date is set. If you would like to see this question on the April ballot you would want to sign the petition. If you want the 25 million debt, do not sign. This is referred to as “new money”. There is already a significant bond burden.

If you would like to sign the petition you can text me at 563-260-1737. Or message me here.

If anyone is interested in running for the school board, here is the instructions

So far my journey has been fascinating, challenging and rewarding. I would challenge young people to get involved with your school districts and become a leader.

You will face difficult situations but it is so worth it.

If you are in a position to bring positivity to the table, please do it!

Our district benefits having multiple candidates to choose from.

Give that a thought. Bring it!

Pay close attention to the interviews of Mike Bounds and Bill Smock as they answer the question that refers to the benefits of locating the schools where they did, costing in excess of 12 million dollars.

Both walked around it and never did!
There was absolutely no benefit to your children and their education.

I was going to wait until morning to post this but, I just cannot. It has been a long time since I outright belly laughed but all the way home today I found this hysterical! In the spirit of transparency, allow me to share!

Many folks in our community do not have Facebook so WRMJ is the major source of information. They do a great job! So let me share a quick lesson about public speaking with a hint of political science attached! There are different types of public speaking. In politics the main two are prepared and impromptu. I promise you an incumbent will always be in a prepared position to speak. They sit the board with the information. The challenging candidates are always in a position of impromptu speech with smidgens of information to support them. Add some nerves and it can get interesting!

I promise I am not and nor will I ever be the “I know everything guy!” I will be there for the kids though!
