Before anything else, thank you. To the carpenter, the electrician, the teacher, the nurse, the welder, the farmer, the firefighter, the captain, the mechanic, and everyone else who built this week with their hands or their attention, this weekend is yours.

DECOY knows the value of work because DECOY is built the same way. The decoys are still carved and painted in the New Bern shop. The collaboration tees ride a Privateer Roamer II and a rig of Dixie Decoys, both handmade in North Carolina, because sporting life lives downstream of work, not above it.

The long weekend earns its rest. Today is the day the work gets put down, the boat comes out, the dock gets walked, the porch gets sat on.

The good old days are now, and the man or woman taking Monday off earned them the same way they always have, by working for them.

The sunflower field gets another look. Shotguns come out of the safe. Dogs seem to know before anyone tells them. And a few stories from last season start making the rounds again.

The light changes before the calendar does.

The shirts and hats that carried us through long days on the water and in the field still have a few more mornings ahead. But the sporting year is beginning to turn. Field coats come down from the hook, canvas finds its place again, and thoughts drift toward cool mornings, good dogs, and the season ahead.

There are bumpers to throw, whistles to answer, wet dogs to load into the truck, and another evening spent getting ready for a season neither of you has forgotten.

A good field dog does not know it’s National Dog Day.

He just knows you’re getting the gear out again.

And that means his favorite time of year cannot be far behind.

Some photographs are worth more than the moment they captured.

Two chairs. Two ci**rs. A long day at gamefairusa behind us. The conversations had slowed, the crowd had thinned, and there was finally a minute to sit still.

Years from now, this Polaroid will probably bring back the stories we forgot to write down. The people we met. The hands we shook. The laughs shared under the tent.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, pulled up a chair, and spent a little time with us. We’ll see you down the road.
