Today was a truly special day for me as an instructor.
11 years ago, I tested for my Sandan. That next day Jorge showed up to the dojo and was my very first student after I was granted the title of Sensei. Fast forward to today…….it all came full circle as he was promoted to Sandan. Watching him start his journey, at the young age of 53 🤣, his dedication, growth, and perseverance over the years has been an incredible reminder of why we do what we do. It also stands as a reminder that you are never too old to start something new.
I’m also so proud of my student Julian, who began training with me before COVID and was promoted today to Junior Shodan. I am proud of his growth over the years. But most importantly his dedication, focus, and determination with a little push from his other students, instructors and most importantly his Mom. The journey to getting your black belt belt wasn’t easy as it shouldn’t be. Many students get close to that achievement but fall off when things get hard or uncomfortable. Watching you get to this point makes me feel extremely proud especially when the journey got difficult you didn’t fray, you didn’t say I can’t do this, you just put in the time and did the hard work. To me, that is what earning a black belt is all about.
Karate is so much more than rank or belts. It is about spirit, discipline, confidence, and continuing to push yourself to become better than you were yesterday.
Both of these guys are a testament of what I believe is martial arts greatest gift. “Hard work pays off!” -Osss 🥋👊🏼 - Sensei Johnny
