Genna Sosonko wrote this in memory of a player he’d once trained. Who is Sosonko talking about?

“. . . his successes didn’t lie in theoretical knowledge. The most important thing for him was to create a situation on the board so that the pieces came alive . . . “

This just in—I received this book for review. It’s a novel topic, dealing with emotional intelligence, and includes ways for dealing with our innate flight or fight response, which can nullify our ability to function rationally at the board.

Hrop, a practicing clinical psychologist, is an avid tournament player operating just under master level strength. The author includes many pages of training exercises where readers are told to choose three candidate training moves from complex middle game positions. Emphasis is on learning how to think, and more importantly, to look within, and to understand what motivates us to think and play the way we do. The goal is self improvement and a sense of inner understanding. This is a mature work on a neglected subject.

It’s extremely rare to run across a topic in chess that I’ve yet to encounter. But here it is, and it is fascinating.

Steve Gustafson’s sister, Karen Huckabone has generously donated to our club a number of chess-related items from his estate. Included are a set of wooden chessmen and wood tournament board; a small wooden magnetic set; and a number of instructive chess books and vintage magazines.

We will give these away at tomorrow’s meeting.

Another gentle reminder that membership dues are collected on the first meeting each month, Thursday being March 3rd.

We look forward to seeing you again tomorrow evening!
