⚾🥎 CBSL Coach’s Corner: Catch It in Front — Don’t Let the Ball Play You
On routine catches, players are usually more successful when they move to the ball and receive it in front of their body instead of waiting for it to get too deep.
Players should be learning to:
• Move their feet to get into a better position
• Keep the glove out where they can see it
• Catch routine throws and ground balls in front when possible
• Avoid letting the ball get too deep underneath the body
• Stay balanced through the catch
• Bring the ball to the center of the body for a clean transfer
• Be ready to make the next play right away
Try This at Practice:
Out-Front Catching
Partners make controlled throws while the receiver focuses on catching the ball slightly in front of the body.
Move + Catch
Throw slightly left and right so players have to move their feet before receiving the ball.
Catch + Transfer
Secure the ball, bring it to the center, and get into throwing position smoothly.
The goal isn’t to reach for everything.
It’s to teach players to get their body in position so the catch becomes easier and the next play becomes quicker.
Move to it. Catch it in front. Get ready for what’s next.
Develop ballplayers, not just lineups.
