Daniel Brechmann, of Bochum, Germany, has been officially certified on the Captains of Crush No. 3 gripper! Daniel, who is 39 years old and stands 6’ 4” at 225 lb., started training with CoC grippers in 2023, with some sports-store grippers—"I was a bit disappointed with the feel and resistance of those”—and then got a CoC No. 2.5 and No. 3, and closed the No. 2.5 right away, with the No. 3 a few weeks later. Daniel says he trains grip “almost every day, varying thick bar, pinch and grippers. With [grippers] I tend to mix parallel set, credit card set and no set closes, performing a couple of each once or twice a week. I also like to experiment with training regimens and set challenges. For instance, I lifted a 78-kg Inch bell every day for 100 days straight and got up to 21 reps that way.” A high school teacher of English, German and Latin, Daniel uses his grip strength in his hobby of bouldering, house renovations and “DIY kinds of stuff.” He is “really into sports, such as powerlifting,” and is also a trained coach and teaches bouldering classes and runs a powerlifting club for his students at school, noting, “I’ve found that it really helps with general motivational aspects of school and learning, a real benefit for my students.” He has also “been lifting weights on and off most my adult life and I enjoy road cycling.” Daniel says he has achieved his first grip goals quite quickly, lifting an original Fatman Blob and a Thomas Inch dumbbell and closing a CoC No. 3 gripper within his first six months of grip sports. He adds, “In my second year, I did some more elite feats, such as closing CoC No. 3.5s, double Inch lift, combo lifts (e.g., an Inch / CoC #3 combo, which I particularly liked), double No. 3 no set close, lifting the Holle 30 blob as the 7th person in the world, and a proper deep dish 45-lb. plate pinch. These feats [were] achieved with the support of members of the grip community, especially Florian Kellersmann (CoC3 ’04), with whom I train occasionally, and also Carl-August Mertz (CoC3 ’15), who gave me a lot of useful advice. My wife and daughter are very supportive of my goals, too. Further grip goals include certifying on the CoC No. 3.5 and closing CoC No. 4, which is WAY down the road. I also hope to certify the IronMind Red Nail and to lift heavier Inch bells. Congratulations, Daniel: your name has been added to the official list: https://ironmind.com/product-info/certification/captains-of-crush/whos-who-no.-3-coc/ You can watch Daniel in his certification attempt here: https://youtu.be/LtL4lu4-o3o

Challenge isn’t just a grip strength standard that is fun, significant and achievable: mastering it means that you have superior all-around grip strength . . . what you need to excel in a sport or on the job, and what you need if your life or someone else’s might depend on how strong your grip is. Sebastian Pacey-Smith, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, has broken the Men’s Rolling Thunder One-arm Pull-up record by knocking out 4 reps and besting the former record of 3 reps set in 2023. Sebastian is 35 years old, standing 6’ 2” tall and weighing 167 lb., and his world record represents a mind-numbing level of pull-up power, with the added challenge of hanging on to a Rolling Thunder while doing the pull-ups. A rock climber, Sebastian said he “has always been very motivated to push [my] limits in training and climbing hard outdoors. [I] initially started competing in gripsport in 2024 and went on to win [my] weight class at the World Armlifting Championships in Las Vegas in 2025.” Armlifting began as a single-event competition featuring the Rolling Thunder and has evolved to include multiple events. As to the future, Sebastian said he’s “looking forward to continuing progressing in grip and in climbing hard boulders.” Congratulations, Sebastian, on your excellent performance! Chad Gustin, of Lawrence, Kansas, has been certified for officially closing the Captains of Crush No. 3 gripper! https://ironmind.com/product-info/certification/captains-of-crush/whos-who-no.-3-coc/ Chad, who is 46 years old and stands 6’ 5” at 260 lb., has been an ER physician for the past 20 years. Chad says he “was taught the value of a strong and respectful handshake by my Grandpa Felling, who grew up farming in Minnesota and had huge strong hands. He said it was the best way to make a good first impression.” After reading about Captains of Crush grippers in IronMind’s strength journal MILO, Chad bought his first IronMind gripper in 2005, the CoC No. 1,” adding “I could close the CoC No. 2 the first time I tried. I train grip twice a week and grippers specifically once a week. I had stalled for a long time . . . until I got some tips from Ben Edwards (CoC3 ’05), and then things skyrocketed.” Chad noted that “since the Covid pandemic, the handshake has all but gone away, replaced by the ‘awkward fist bump,’ especially in medical settings. I try to keep the strong handshake tradition alive through my two children, Ace and Elle, who have been competing in grip sport with me since 2020! My children are definitely starting to understand the importance of a strong grip and how it crosses over to many aspects of life and sports, from motocross to basketball to clearing land and splitting wood (I do a lot of forest clearing with chainsaws and splitting logs by hand with a heavy splitting maul). I want to be a good example to my children about pursuing things they are passionate about and setting goals and remembering the balance of mind, body, and spirit. As an ER physician I work a lot of nights, weekends, and holidays, and fatigue and exhaustion are constant enemies, but one of the most inspirational things that gets me through is while getting dressed before each shift, I read a small note my daughter wrote to me in her little handwriting on the wall by the mirror: ‘Good luck, Dad, and remember, whatever you do (it doesn't matter what it is) do it in the name of the Lord! Colossians 3:17’!!” Chad says, “I want to especially thank Ben Edwards for his training tips, advice and encouragement during this journey to make it a success. Thank you, IronMind, for this opportunity.” Congratulations, Chad—you did it! You can see Chad’s certification attempt here: https://youtu.be/SxdablyMxpM

Ivan Krivykh, of Tolyatti, Russia, hit 180.40 kg (397.71 lb.) to break the world record for the maximum weight Rolling Thunder Pull-up: https://ironmind.com/product-info/certification/rolling-thunder/rules-and-world-records-00001/ The previous record was 175.18 kg (386.27 lb.). Ivan is 35 years old and weighs 110.5 kg (244 lb.), standing 192 cm (6’ 4”). A jewelry designer and craftsman by trade, Ivan has been working in his family business for over 15 years. Ivan told us, “My athletic journey began with armwrestling when I was 25. I had some success, but constant injuries hindered my progress. After a couple of years, I discovered armlifting and literally fell in love with the sport. Over my 8 years in armlifting, I have set numerous world records in the under 90 kg and under 100 kg categories. I also hold the absolute records on certain apparatuses.” Ivan said, “Grip strength is something magical—it allows you to demonstrate incredible power regardless of your physical size.” He added, “I have no intention of stopping here; I will keep training to become stronger. In 2026, I plan to come to the USA to showcase my level of strength.” Congratulations, Ivan: it’s official and you have broken the world record for the Rolling Thunder Maximum Weight Pull-up . . . a huge accomplishment in the grip strength world! Afterward, Ivan told us, “This was my first time certifying a lift online, and I was incredibly nervous. I’m so thrilled and hope to have the opportunity to showcase my grip strength in other disciplines as well.” Randall Strossen, IronMind president and head referee, noted: “You are very welcome, Ivan—you did everything perfectly, and it was a good idea to have multiple camera angles as that made it easier for the referees to judge the maximum height of your pull-up.” You can watch Ivan Krivykh’s world record attempt here: https://youtu.be/DasJW3M2rhU
