Way to go RODEOHOUSTON !!
If you plan to attend the 2026 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, please either keep your b***s and butt cheeks to yourself or stay home.
Houston just handed down an unprecedented new dress code policy during the run of our richest regular-season rodeo that strictly prohibits obscene graphics and offensive language on clothing. Don’t come humming Kenny Chesney’s “No shirts, no shoes, no problem,” or you’ll be turned away at the gate. Shirts and shoes are required.
The statement issued Monday night also includes “no overly revealing outfits, no gang-related clothing or symbols, and no face coverings, unless for religious, medical or cultural reasons.”
I can't believe it's come to this. But this move came on the heels of fights breaking out in the carnival area over the weekend, and “out of an abundance of caution” for the safety of Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo guests. The carnival had to be shut down early on Saturday night for safety reasons.
“This is a family-friendly event,” the statement read. “We want every guest, especially young people, to have a safe and memorable experience. We will not allow inappropriate attire or behavior to take away from that.”
Fair enough. My personal dress code policy has always been that I not walk out of the house wearing anything I wouldn’t be comfortable wearing in front of my parents, grandparents or sons. I have now seen photographic evidence as documented by cowboys that it’s trending at RodeoHouston this year for women of all ages and weight classes to wear only thongs and boots from the waist down. Dear goodness.
It took guts and legal backing to implement this policy, but if people won’t police themselves, perhaps there was no choice. Much thought and legal counsel went into this move. I’m borderline surprised that in today’s lawsuit-happy legal climate, Houston’s legal team was confident it would stand. But you have to keep people safe before you can entertain them.
Anyway, with Houston being the richest rodeo of our regular season, cowboy and cowgirl livelihoods are greatly impacted by this opportunity every year. I think they said five 2025 Houston champs went on to win world titles last year. RodeoHouston has also awarded more than 22,000 scholarships to the tune of $660 million for Texas youth, and this event has been a memorable part of generations of childhoods since 1932.
So I guess if you can’t dress appropriately and be nice, stay home so today’s parents and grandparents don’t have to deny their kids the RodeoHouston experience.
Thanks for all you do for our cowboy community, RODEOHOUSTON, and that includes keeping it safe to take our littles to the carnival for a ferris-wheel ride and funnel cake before or after the rodeo.
