Iron Ore Heritage Trail

Iron Ore Heritage Trail 47 Mile multi use year round interpretive trail system.

Welcome Traveler

The Iron Ore Heritage Trail will be a 48-mile, multi-use, year round trail that connects communities and people to the region’s historic sites and human stories. Through a multitude of interpretation methods, we can share the story of the Marquette Iron Range and our 160+ years of mining ore that changed the landscape of Marquette County and the United States.

A report of a black bear spotted on the IOHT in Negaunee Twp over the weekend. Although typically not a threat to people, black bears can be unpredictable if startled or in the vicinity of cubs. While using this section of trail between Negaunee to Maquette Township keep an eye out for unexpected encounters.

Thank you trail users for keeping an eye on the trail. This tree top east of Negaunee on the uphill past the boardwalk was cleared yesterday after several trail user noted it down and let us know. There is also a significant land slide across the IOHT between Stone St. and Excelsior St. in Ishpeming as well as flooding between Excelsior St. and Washington St. just down trail going west.
Currently, most pathway that is paved is clear of snow, but still needs clean up. There is still ice pack along the section near Jackson Pit Mine in Negaunee as well as most trail with gravel or aggregate surface.

Celebrate Trails Day sponsored by the Rails to Trails Conservancy kicks off the season as a day of trail recognition and advocacy.
Although there is currently limited access to trails due to snowpack, there is plenty of clear trail along the Lake Superior shoreline.

TRAIL HAZARD:
Many sections of the IOHT (MiDNR C Route) west of Wawonowin Road to Republic have flowing water on the trail. Please avoid riding at this time until water recedes and trails dry out. Trail riding can increase erosion problems and snowpack may collapse without warning.

With temperatures expected to warm up above freezing over the next few days please avoid damaging groomed trails. Rule of thumb is "Think Before You Sink" if you're leaving tracks more than 1" deep conditions are too soft. Adjust your equipment or trail of choice.

Enjoy winter and keep the trails in good conditions for all trail users. Ore Heritage, NTN Trails, RAMBA
