Managing how we show up in our relationships can have a huge impact. But getting to a positive and peaceful state can sometimes be hard. Stop and think about what are the things you do where you feel your truest self. Some helpful exercises include meditation, breathing, or listening to your favorite music. Engage your senses. When we are in a peaceful, positive state, we are better equipped to handle life’s ups and downs.

Things don’t always go as planned. How we handle ourselves and manage our state during those moments has a big impact on the people around us. The energy we bring into a room attracts more of that same energy. When we are upset or frustrated over something at work, it can make us upset or frustrated with our family members. Next time this happens, stop and notice how you feel. Reach out to me for a complimentary conversation - I’d love to talk through how this is playing out in your world.

It’s hard to stop something you know is not good for you - for example, eating chips while watching TV. But to replace it with something better for yourself is a path toward positive change - like eating carrots instead! It’s the same with our relationships. If you find yourself looking for everything that is wrong or not working, replace those thoughts by putting your attention on what is working or what is going well. Small shifts over time can make a big impact…and it all begins with one new thought.

Research has shown that of the approximately 10,000 to 70,000 thoughts we have in a day, 80% of them are negative. And almost 95% of them are repeated from the day before! It’s empowering to think what might happen if we were to change just half of those negative thoughts to positive ones. The key is to become aware of those thoughts, do something to break the pattern, and then replace them with a positive thought or gratitude. Small shifts in your thought patterns can make big changes in your life and relationships over time.

We always have the opportunity to change our perspective. When we see our teens as naturally creative, resourceful and whole, we open the door to building trust, resilience and stronger relationships with them. Take some time today to make a list of your teen’s positive traits - you can even share with them what you’ve come up with (wink, wink). It will help you see those traits more often.

Do you often find yourself thinking your teen can not do something - or needs your help in order to get it done. It can be hard to remember they are no longer a little toddler learning to walk. When we continue to see our teens as helpless or in need of fixing, we tend to only see helplessness and problems that need fixing. Give space and allow room for your teen to explore and fail. It can help them build resilience.

How we show up for our teens can be reflected in how they react to us. Are you constantly frustrated? Or worried? Or do you tend more toward open ended conversations and encourage your teen? Next time you interact with them, be aware of yourself and the impact you have on their reaction. If you are noticing things you’d like to change and are struggling with how, please reach out to me for a complimentary conversation.

We are always having an impact on our relationships - whether we are aware of it or not. Start observing how people respond to you - how does your teen respond to you? What is working and what is not. As I have mentioned before, the first step toward successful change and growth is becoming aware. Then we have the opportunity to choose our next path.

A two degree shift in course direction for a large sea vessel can lead to an entirely new destination - just as a small touch to a domino can create a change in structure. Small shifts over time make a big impact. What small shifts are you ready to make in your parenting, and in your life?

Connect with me if you are ready to get support to make positive changes in your family.

When you become more aware of yourself, you get to choose how you want to be. The same is true for parenting. When you take the time to become more aware of the way you parent (noticing what works versus what doesn’t), you can choose what you want to do about it.

I am excited to announce that I am working on an online program for parents, to help you become more aware, and to give you tools and tips on how to lead positive changes in your family. More to come on that…
