Nederland Defensive Arts

Nederland Defensive Arts Practical self defense martial arts for adults and teens I've been training in the martial arts since 1997 and been teaching since 2003. That is a fantasy.

I hold 5th degree black belts in both Shorin Ryu (traditional Okinawan Karate) and Chon Tu Kwan Hapkido. (For more information on Chon Tu Kwan, google ICHF Martial Arts). I also have training in Kobudo (traditional Okinawan weapons). My teaching philosophy is that martial arts should be a practical and useful part of the student's life; and that any self defense method that requires brute strength

instead of good technique is useless. Students will learn to escape from common types of attacks such as grabs and strikes, as well as defense against armed attackers. They will also learn the legal and ethical implications involved in self defense; i.e. defending yourself in a way that protects you legally as well as physically. Sadly, there are a few schools who teach unrealistic self defense, assuring the student they will be able to take care of themselves by using certain "tricks" that will quickly disable an attacker in seconds. Such schools place their students in danger by giving them a false sense of security. All self defense situations are potentially dangerous, and your first, best defense is to escape before trouble starts. Use of your martial arts training is your last resort, not your first.

If you've ever felt that something just wasn't right, this video explores the power of your "gut feeling" and "instinct." We dive into the "psychology" behin...

One of the first - and perhaps most important - techniques a new student learns at NDA isn't what you might think. New students begin by learning how to fall correctly. This is to prevent injuries in class, but more importantly, while a student might (if they're lucky) never have to defend themselves from an attacker, falls happen all the time, and needless to say can cause serious injury. Knowing how to fall in such a way as to prevent or minimize injury can potentially be the most useful thing a student learns

Every martial arts instructor who teaches self defense hopes that their students never have to actually use their training. Recently, one of my students was in a potentially dangerous situation (I will not use her name to respect her privacy) and responded to an arm grab from an intoxicated stranger by doing exactly what was appropriate - took him down hard and escaped. No one was injured and the situation was resolved in seconds. Well done.
