John Taffin, one of the giants of sixgunners, passed away on the evening of March 10, 2025.

A long-time writer for GUNS Magazine and American Handgunner Magazine, he was considered one of the most knowledgeable experts about revolvers who has ever lived. His works have inspired and delighted generations of readers.

The FMG family extends our prayers and sympathies to "Diamond Dot" and the entire Taffin family, along with his countless readers.

Cash reward offered and no questions asked, for return of, or information that leads to the recovery of a DMPS .300 Blackout 16" carbine, that was possibly left at the club, sometime prior to hurricane Helene or removed from the owner's vehicle at the club. It has a carbine length round free float handguard tube and had a scope mounted on it.
The owner purchased the lower directly from an FFL, so there is proof of ownership and the serial number has been reported lost/stolen to the McDowell County Sheriff's department.

In his thirty years of reporting the shooting sports, Jim played a pivotal role in the industry and will be greatly missed.

Please read, important information below.
The club held a special membership/BOD meeting on Tuesday, August 16th. Thank you to everyone that attended. During the meeting we were able to share information and most importantly confirm the slate of officers and range directors. Below you will find a summary of the meeting and several IMPORTANT items related to range status, shooting opportunities and the need for volunteer support.

Range Announcements
5 Stand Shotgun range in operational and will be open every third Saturday morning beginning August 20th. Mark your calendar and join us. No experience, no problem!
Archery Range - Need volunteers to set up targets and do a bit of maintenance in preparation for a 'training' day on August 27th.. Date: August 26th from 9 - noon. Contact Doug at 336 736 1517 or email [email protected]
Archery Range - August 27th 9am - 3pm. Doug will be available to work with anyone that is interested in Archery. Please contact him if you are interested.
Closure Announcement: All ranges will be closed at 5PM on Saturday, August 20th due to a wedding nearby. Being neighborly is always a good thing to do.
General Information
Grounds and ranges are in pretty good shape. We continue our efforts to improve drainage, build target stands and provide an outstanding facility. REMEMBER, everyone is responsible for keeping the ranges safe, clean and maintained. If you see something, say something.
Trouble on the 3-Gun Side - we continue to have challenges with members/guests disregarding basic manners on the 3 - Gun range.
The equipment and barrels that are stored under cover there are NOT for day to day use. They are NOT trash cans. There are appropriate containers for trash and brass - use them.
Steel targets are great - they are also expensive. Obey the rules - don't move them, don't shoot them with high power rifles, don't put targets in front of them. Use good judgement.
Use the target stands - bring your own cardboard/targets. DO NOT use the gun racks that we've built for competitions to prop up the target stands.
Badges - we are introducing 'permanent' plastic badges this year. They will have your name, our logo and a photo on the front along with the gate code and club address on the back. EVERYONE needs to contact Tonia at [email protected] to submit a photo. The photo should be in 'portrait' (vertical) orientation. Cell phone pictures are fine.
New Members - Six new members were confirmed at the meeting. We have four pending review of their applications and sponsorship assignments.
Friends of the NRA table - the club agreed to sponsor a table at the fund raising dinner on September 22nd. As part of the sponsorship, the club will receive a gun that will be raffled off in the fall. Information, including a list of all the merchandise that will be auctioned and items that will be raffled off can be found at:

PLAN TO ATTEND: TUESDAY, AUGUST 16TH AT 7PM
Carolina West Shooting Club will be hosting a joint membership and Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday. We need your support to ensure we have a quorum and can seat new board members. It is a great opportunity to join the leadership of the club, to volunteer with various projects and share your thoughts on how we can continue to improve the club.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, August 16th at 7PM. We look forward to seeing you there.

This message is to provide CWSC members with a few important updates.

It is important that we have as many members as possible attend our special membership meeting on Tuesday, August 16th. Our bylaws require that we have a quorum of members present to conduct club business related to the nominations/elections to the Board of Directors. Your participation is essential

"The South range will be closed on Friday, August 12 from 8 am until 1 pm for shooting on the 500 yard range. The south range gate will be disabled during that time. The 3 gun range will be open as usual. Contact Bob Hinceman (828-430-1773) or John Pou (813-340-3176) with any questions."

We continue our efforts to complete the maintain the ranges. Work sessions are held on Thursday mornings. Please contact Arvin Hicks for details.

Thank you to those who have paid their dues. As of this week, 2/3 of the clubs active members have paid. If you have not done so and intend to remain a member of the club - please send in your payment as soon as possible. We will be issuing new badges and changing the gate code soon.

Carolina West is a private, members only shooting club. As such, we rely on our members for support to ensure that our ranges are kept in good shape and that the grounds and buildings are well maintained. As a member of CWSC, it isn't enough to simply pay your annual dues and depend on others to handle all of the work required to ensure a safe shooting environment for everyone. Too often we rely on a very small group (less than 10%) of our members to handle everything necessary to provide a well maintained property.

The ranges don't maintain themselves. The grass doesn't mow itself. This spring we would like to break the cycle of dependency on a small group of members and encourage more members to support the club.

Most needs are pretty straightforward: assist with lawn mowing, range maintenance and or events now and then. Right now, we'd like to build a 'go to' list of potential volunteers. With that in mind, please respond to this message by emailing us at [email protected] with the following information.

2. Potential areas of interest
3. Best times/days of the week for you to volunteer

We will build a master list based on your input and follow up directly with those who respond.

Don't forget to join us at 9AM on Saturday, February 12th for a casual 'match' on the 3 gun range.

If you've ever thought about participating in a three gun match at CWSC but were intimidated by the format or thought you needed a full complement of guns - we have an event for you!

Saturday, February 12th - we will be hosting an event on the three gun range where shooters can use either PPC, Pistol or 22LR. Your choice of guns - pick one and participate.

Start time is 9AM. Estimate ammunition needed - 160 rounds.
