Tournament recap from the Newport Bassmaster Kayak Series Presented By Native Watercraft on Caddo and Bistineau

Prefishing on Bistineau was horrible at best. Went to Caddo blind for the tournament and fished an area I had never been to
Day 1 was prefrontal conditions. Lost the first 3 fish of the morning due to not checking my drag on my reel. Managed to put 4 in the boat though including the 19.25” one.

Day 2 I was finally able to perfect the pattern. 9 fish caught and 4 others spit the hook so a good day on the water I’d say.

Finished the tournament in 93rd out of 211 anglers. Not pretty, but if I had caught just 1 more fish on Saturday, it would’ve put me 30+ places better.

All fish were on the Crush City Pig Stick. The Yakrods Dropshot and Tethered spinning rods performed phenomenally. I had to skip the bait right up next to the cypress trees and those 2 rods skip so easily! The Bonafide Fishing XTR held up with ease in the 10+ MPH winds all week and the Newport Vessels NK300 pushed me around through grass like it wasn’t even there. Having the FTK Trailers TMaxx to haul everything made wet launching with dry feet very efficient when launching with 20 other people at the ramp. And the Amped Outdoors LLC 36v50ah lasted all day and could’ve went all tournament if I wanted to as a motor battery. Electronics were powered by their 12v60ah and it lasted both days and still had plenty left over. The DECKED system held all my gear and the Free Spirit Recreation Aspen Lite XL was awesome for camping as always.

The best treat was having Caro Ferguson as a fishing and camping buddy! She put up some tanks on day 2 and her FTK trailer definitely got more looks than mine 😂

FTK Trailers keep your feet dry as you wet launch

Let’s talk customer service. There are a ton of kayak trailer manufacturers out there. Some good, some not so good. I did a ton of research prior to my first trailer and for the second, going with Fish TX was a no brainer. Here’s the proof why Nick is the best in the business.

Picked up my new FTK Trailers trailer and on the way from Louisiana to South Carolina, had some hub/bearing/axle problems. Nick with FTK answered around 10 phone calls, 3 FaceTime calls, and tons of texts from me. Most of these were after hours. He got me the right part numbers so I could get the trailer to the tournament and home.

But here’s the kicker…he shipped a new axle and hubs to permanently fix the problem. Originally, we wanted to get the trailer to him, but with back to back tournaments, that wasn’t a good option. Luckily, my dad is a great mechanic and has all the heavy duty stuff to make life easier. Got the axle changed out last night and it’s like a brand new trailer again.

So if you’re in the market for a new trailer, ask yourself how many other manufacturers will answer the phone, text, and FaceTime. Ask if they will do it after hours. And ask if they will ship you everything you need to make it right. Plus having the ability to carry 2 kayaks, launch them without ever getting your feet wet, and look that pretty!
