Internet BS. Designed to get clicks and time. The Yes, they do crack, sometimes. The real reason 4 bolt mains make a block stronger is the extra bolts prevent cap flex and cap walk. That is where the engineering comes in. when the 4 bolt BB's showed up in 65 the caps did not flex as much and walk or chafe. the4 bolt small blocks showed up when GM went to the large journal cranks. The cranks flexed less, but the caps were thinner and walked and glexed more. Hot rod industry had been putting 4 bolt caps on SBC's since the early 60's. the first 4 bolt blok I saw was in 1964 and it was a 280 that was bored to 301. It came from my cousin in Brawley, California. I think it was done by a shop in Yuma Az. The guy said it was cheaper, that is a BS statement because GM was paying for extra machine work to drill holes and for the extra bolts. how was that cheaper. The GM engineers actually designed in extra cost on 4 bolt engines. BTW in 54 years of doing machineshop/engine building business ownership I have seen very few blocks cracked like he said. If your want ing to see something designed wron by GM look at the mid 70's SBC heads that they took cast iorn out of and they are just about 2 out of 3 cracked through the exhaust seats.
🚨 Everyone believed 4-bolt Chevy blocks were stronger… but the truth will shock you.Back in the 1970s, GM marketed 4-bolt mains as “heavy duty” — but instea...
