This is directed towards Pat Davis and Arlington Park Racetrack Memories. I saw the post and couldn’t respond as I’m restricted until 9/11
So here is my response.
It’s extremely unfortunate that Illinois racing got to this point. Churchill Downs changed their focus and direction towards gaming, not racing. I’m not sure CD would have kept AP going even if they actually built the casino. They tear down tracks like a construction company with wrecking balls. The Cary family didn’t put a dime in the hell-hole Hawthorne was. For years they left that place like a hobo lounge. It was pathetic. And like many second generations, they didn’t want to continue. They didn’t want to sell and they didn’t want partners. And what they did to end Chicago racing, was pathetic, and an awful thing to do to the horsemen, hard working employees, and the hardest working people in the support of all us horsemen. We had great times at Arlington, and less great times-but fun, at what I call the “Pit”, Hawthorne. I’m saddened by the outcome but glad that Hawthorne is gone. The only great thing I can say about AP was our horse won the last race on Sept 25, 2021, Sister Ruler.
