A eager 20-year-old trainer with a head full of knowledge and a 46-year-old mom aren't going to be on the same wavelength, and that’s important to recognize.
It's not about whether someone knows their stuff. It's about whether they understand what your life actually looks like right now. Your schedule, what's hurting, what you've tried before and why it didn't last. A trainer who gets that is worth more than one with a longer list of credentials.
When you're ready to find someone who actually fits where you are, come talk to us. That's what the free intro call is for.

Most personal trainers get certified from a book. They read it, passed a test, but never actually work with a human being before they take their first client. The test covers the mechanics of increasing fitness. It doesn't cover how to help someone build a habit around training, fit nutrition into their actual life, and how keep showing up when motivation runs out. That part comes from years of coaching real people, and a lot of trainers don't stick around long enough to get there.
If you've ever worked with someone and felt like they handed you a program and then checked out, you should expect better.

People come in super, super excited about losing weight or getting stronger. That excitement is real and it counts.
But without taking a step back to build the structures and habits that actually lead to those outcomes, the outcomes just don't seem to materialize. It's not a motivation problem. The behaviors haven't been built yet.
We give people a lot of structure up front for exactly that reason. Personal training, individual coaching, modifications that meet you where you're at. All of it is there to help you show up consistently while the habits are still taking root. That's what sets people up for the long run.

If you've ever wanted to run a 5K but never quite made it happen, the Nok to 5K is built for you.
Six weeks. Twice a week. Coach Bertha walks you through the whole thing, including the mechanics, the drills, and the strength work that makes running feel less punishing on your body. In between, you'll have at-home workouts. Not long runs, not hard runs. Walk intervals and progressions that build your base without wearing you out.
The course is designed to progress. What you do in week one is different from what you do in week six, because your body will be different by then.
By the end, you'll have done the training it takes to finish a 5K. Whether you sign up for a race is up to you.
$192. Starts June 9.

Most people set a goal and then wait for it to happen.
I was watching a business coach recently who made this point: revenue isn't the goal, it's the outcome. And the same thing is true for fitness. Losing weight, getting stronger, feeling better β€” those are outcomes. You can't just aim at them and expect them to show up. They show up when you've built consistent behaviors over time.
That's why we give people a lot of structure up front at T&S. Personal training, one-on-one attention, modifications to meet them where they're at, flexible scheduling. As your confidence grows and your fitness improves, we step back and give you more autonomy. But we're still there the whole time, supporting the behaviors that will deliver the outcomes you said were important to you.

If you've heard "semi-private training" and weren't sure what it meant, we wrote something for you.
It's not a small group class. It's a personal training experience where you and one or two other people split the cost of the coach's time. Your program is still built for you. The coach still knows your name, your goals, and your history. You're just not the only one in the room.
We cover what it actually looks like, who it works best for, and when it's not the right fit.

The thing nobody tells you is that starting with five days a week almost guarantees failure. Not because five days is wrong, but because it's outside of your reach before the habit is even built. You miss a day, then two, then you're convincing yourself you don't have what it takes.
We start most people at two days a week at Timber & Steel in Nampa. Not because it's the bare minimum, but because that's where it's easy to build a habit. And the habit is the whole thing.
Once it's there, you can build on it. Two days a week is a good place to start. For a lot of people, it's enough.

Finding ways to get our kids active is a challenge. Sometimes we have to get creative and do it with them.

Most fitness content is telling you to do more. More days, more volume, more intensity. When you can't keep up with that, it stops feeling like a scheduling problem. It starts feeling like a you problem.
Two days a week is probably enough for most people. Enough to pick up your kids, keep up on a hike, play with your grandkids. Those are real goals, and two days a week gets you there.
Consistency matters more than how many days you're in the gym. Show up two days a week, keep doing it, and you're ahead of a lot of people. That's not a lowered bar. That's how it actually works.

You get home with 30 minutes before you have to be somewhere else. There's nothing ready. So you grab a protein bar, maybe a shake, and you're hungry again an hour later.
That's not a discipline problem. That's a setup problem.
On this week's podcast, Clayton and Bridgett talk through how they actually handle food in their house. It's not fancy. Bulk chicken thighs cooked all at once in four different flavors. Taco meat made in a big pot that shows up in bowls, salads, and omelets for days. The goal isn't perfection. It's having something ready when you don't have time to think about it.
If meal prep feels like too much, start smaller. Cook extra at dinner tonight. That's it. You've got lunch tomorrow.
