Let momma mourn. ☹️

We’ve received several reports of an adult
dolphin pushing a deceased neonate (newborn) around yesterday near Folly Beach. Our partners, the South Carolina Marine Mammal Stranding Network and Coastal Carolina University, responded yesterday. This is a difficult situation in that we don’t want to disturb her grieving process but the mother is likely not resting or feeding while she carries it around. Marine mammals have been known to carry their offspring around for days to weeks. It is calving season and a proportion of neonates don’t survive for a variety of reasons such as her being a first time mom or contaminates offloaded by mom.

If you see this pair again, please report them to 800.922.5431. Authorization is required to interact with them. DO NOT approach them or attempt to retrieve the calf.
