Beginner golfers often fall into a few common traps that can seriously hinder their progress. Here are three of the biggest mistakes often made:
1. Poor Grip and Setup
❌Mistake: Many beginners start with a weak or incorrect grip and poor stance, which sets them up for failure before they even swing.
🤔 Why it matters: The grip and setup are the foundation of a good swing. A bad grip can lead to slices, hooks, or weak shots, while bad posture or alignment affects ball direction and contact.
✅Fix: Learn and practice a proper grip (neutral, not too strong or weak), and focus on alignment, ball position, and balance during setup.
2. Swinging Too Hard
❌Mistake: Trying to hit the ball as hard as possible, especially with drivers.
🤔Why it matters: Swinging too hard often ruins tempo, causes poor contact, and leads to inconsistent results. Power comes from technique, not brute force.
✅Fix: Focus on smooth, controlled swings with good tempo. Let the club do the work—centered contact matters more than swing speed.
3. Ignoring the Short Game
❌Mistake: Beginners tend to practice only full swings and neglect putting, chipping, and pitching.
🤔Why it matters: Over half of the strokes in a round come from within 100 yards of the green. A poor short game kills scores quickly.
✅Fix: Spend at least half of your practice time on putting, chipping, and bunker shots. These are easier to improve and pay off faster in scoring.
⛳️Taking a few lessons early on can prevent these mistakes from becoming ingrained habits. Even one or two sessions with a pro can make a big difference.
