TOPIC: Why study these Japanese martial arts ?

Kodokan Judo is a traditional Japanese martial art that was developed in 1882 by Kano, Jigoro Kodokan translates as place to study the way and Judo translates as gentle or soft way.
Techniques of Judo include: over 65 throws, beginning with learning the 1. GOKYO NO WAZA
Series of 40 throws

2. Katame Waza
a. holds - osae komi waza
b. chokes - shime waza
c. joint locks - kansetsu waza
3. Atemi Waza

PLUS UKEMI WAZA ( learning to fall safely )
Also the study of Kodokan Kata

Judo is the first martial art to become an olympic sport and therefore Judo is both a martial art and olympic sport.

SOUTHAM DOJO LLC teaches Judo as an effective means of self-defense and not sport. A student learns to apply the PRINCIPLES and TECHNIQUES to defend themselves.
Kodokan Judo gives an individual options in their response to an assault, with the safety of the assailant a priority whenever possible.
Your options can be mild or severe ( if needed ).
It is not a martial art that only has inflicting injury as its only option. Kodokan Judo gives the student FLEXIBILITY in their response.

TOPIC: Information for new students studying Kodokan Judo !

When you begin your study of the art you will learn the GOKYO NO WAZA which are a series of 40 throws by the time you reach SHODAN ! For example if your teacher follows a colored belt system of : Yellow 6kyu
Orange 5th kyu
Green 4th kyu
Brown 3rd kyu
Brown 2nd kyu
Brown 1st kyu
From Yellow belt to 2nd kyu you should know all 40 throws with 8 throws at each level. 1st kyu will be polishing and improvement on all throws.
This means you will be doing alot of UCHIKOMI which is form fitting starting with the very first introductory throw.

If your teacher studies Judo as a Japanese MARTIAL ART you will learn how to use the techniques in many self defense situations.

Topic: Do you feel you are too old to study martial arts ?
GOOD NEWS ! You can study martial arts your who life.
Of course in some hardcore arts were the physical activity is high intensity we might want to choose a more moderate due to our age. You just have to find the art that fits you: meaning AGE and PHYSICAL CONDITION.

Hakkoryu Jujutsu was designed FOR YOU. In Japan people of all ages study Hakkoryu Jujutsu from youth, young adults, middle age and SENIORS ( Like Myself ). Hakkoryu Jujutsu was designed for ALL.
The techniques are not meant to be destructive and in fact the tenets of Hakkoryu relay that message: 1. No challenge
2. No resistance
3. No injury

Fantastic for Teachers, Social Workers, Police, Hospital Employees where they have a " USE of FORCE " policy requirement. Don't be misled into thinking that the techniques are too soft as compared to other martial arts. Hakkoryu Jujutsu can increase the response to an assault when required ( Should only be intensified when needed)
Older adults would benefit from Hakkoryu Jujutsu. It gives you opptions and flexibility in your response from mild to severe ( when needed ). Without having to cause injury to the assailant.

To find a Hakkoryu Shihan in your part of the USA go to the website " Hakkoryu Jujutsu and Koho Igaku Shiatau "
Locate Instructors list and scroll down to name of Shihan in your State and reach out to them. They can give you more information for their STATE in where to train under a legitimate Hakkoryu Jujutsu practitioner. I am the only Hakkoryu Jujutsu Shihan in Pennsylvania authorized to teach Hakkoryu Jujutsu by the Headmaster Nidai Soke Okuyama, Omiya, Japan.
Seniors can certainly train in this art. School systems, Hospitals/Medical Centers and Police would greatly benefit from Hakkoryu even as a supplement to an existing program/ curriculum.

TOPIC: Why study Hakkoryu Jujutsu and Kodokan Judo ?

Hakkoryu Jujutsu is strictly a self-defense system and has no competition. It is a humane form of self-defense and has the following " tenets" 1. No challenge 2. No resistance 3. No injury

What does this mean if you are not a martial sport system with competition or designs of causing injury to the attacker/competitor?
Hakkoryu Jujutsu is a humane form of self-defense that provides you with flexibility in your response to an assailant from mild to (severe) if required. Hakkoryu gives you options in your response.
Not like some martial arts that have no other option than to cause injury by striking or severe mat work.
The Hakkoryu structure has a world headquarters in Omiya, Japan under the direction of Nidai Soke Okuyama. All Shihan in the USA and worldwide follow Nidai Soke and Hombu regulations.
Those who may be interested can look up Hakkoryu Jujutsu and learn the history of this art created in 1941 by Shodai Soke Okuyama.
You can see the listing of all Shihan worldwide. In the USA look at the listing and scroll down to 2016 and you will see my name as Shihan in Pennsylvania.
Studying Hakkoryu Jujutsu is ideal for Police, Healthcare workers and Teachers. Remember the aim is not to cause injury whenever possible.

All of us who teach Judo may arrange our classes each time a little different due to what area we plan to focus on that day/evening. such as a Judo teacher might focus on mat techniques one night and throwing techniques on a different night and this is OK. Might have time to focus on both throwing and mat work teaching the basic holds, chokes, joint locks found in Judo.

BUT EVERY CLASS SHOULD INCLUDE the teaching of NAGE WAZA before you focus on other areas.
Every Judo teacher who teaches Nage Waza MUST have their students perform " UCHIKOMI " when learning throws. For those teachers who might practice other arts and have added a Judo class. This means form fitting or practicing the throw repeatedly.
Judo Sensei already know this from their many years of practice.
Also for those adding a Judo class. There are 40 basic throws called " GOKYO NO WAZA" that most students learn up to the rank of
Shodan black belt - 1st degree blackbelt.
In addition to learning the Nage No Kata

Other throws are listed under the shinmeisho no waza plus the additional 8 throws that were excluded and eventually reinstated in Judo.
Most students study the Gokyo No Waza up to 1 st degree and Nage Nage No Kata

The Gokyo No Waza is divided into a listing of 8 throws per section.

Many Judo sensei teach Judo as an Olympic Sport and that is fine and are members of national organizations that have sport Judo as their primary focus.
Judo teachers like myself teach Kodokan Judo as a traditional Japanese Martial art with the focus on the martial art aspect /self-defense. Whether you study Sport Judo or Martial art Judo, WE all study the same throws. It is our secondary interests that is different.
SPORT JUDO focus and application to competition OR

MARTIAL ART focus and application to Self-Defense.

In conclusion those who aren't quite sure about their Judo addition of programs. It might not be your teacher's fault due to their just passing on how they were taught to you and you continue the trend onto your students.
Kodokan Judo has something to offer everyone.

I want to thank the "Harrisburg Judo Kai" for allowing me to do a Judo clinic entitled " JUDO SELF-DEFENSE APPLICATION ".
The program was well received by about 20 participants both youth and adults.
The program covered many areas from using various Judo throws against grabs, chokes and strikes. Also using techniques in a more gentle way as not to cause injury. Plus restraining/controlling an individual.

Topic: Women's Defensive Measures

We here how various self-defense classes are being held at this facility or another and techniques are thrown out to the women to learn within a period of weeks. This is all fantastic due to the fact that it starts women to develop a mindset of thinking about self-defense or how do I protect myself and my children.
You may join a martial arts school such as Karate or Taekwondo which is excellent if you have the determination to continue your training.
May I suggest you first begin with studying a program that has an emphasis on situational awareness and self-defense at the beginning of your training or program and moving on to distance training through the techniques of Karate and Taekwondo.
Meaning learn techniques that are common up close and personal such as various attacks where a woman may be grabbed or secured with a bearhug, female assailant reaching for or has grabbed your hair, hoop earrings, necklace etc., etc.,. Situational defence against for example someone trying to place their arm across your shoulder, hands around your hips and pulling you towards them.
a scenario where an assailant has you in a front two handed choke, Or your hand or arm is suddenly grabbed and you are being pulled where you don't want to go such as into a car, alley, house or towards a group of shady characters in a dark location.
There are many situations such as these to INCLUDE situations in the home by family members.

You then can TRANSITION to fighting back scenarios where your Punching. Kicking, Blocking and Parrying skills can be added to the above situations . Then blending it all together to fit your mindset. But you first start with the personal space intrusion and physical contact. Then as I mentioned you are not yet having to respond to a physical touch or movement towards you.
Simply stated you train in various progressive stages of Physical Management of Aggressive Behavior.

If you just want to take a short course and learn just a few things that can be applicable to several types of aggression that is OK. BUT you should practice, practice, practice so your reaction is automatic.

There are Punching and Kicking Arts in Lebanon, Pennsylvania that have excellent teachers such as Isshinryu Karate and Family Karate teaching TKD.

Remember fighting is when two individuals can retreat and walk away but choose to remain to face each other.

SELF-DEFENSE is when your person is being assaulted and you must protect yourself. You are physically grabbed or hit and cannot retreat/run. If you can protect yourself to a point where you are able to extricate yourself from the situation then RUN and seek safety.
