2025 Best 1st Time Visit ● Thunderbird Speedway
This was a triple first for us. First time covering a race in Oklahoma. First time covering Thunderbird Speedway. First time covering the Sooner Late Model Series. With all of that said, we were very stoked heading into this road trip. It made for a joyous night and joyous weekend. I was able to do a video interview with Eli Ross at his race shop. I saw the motocross track directly behind the facility where older brother Hayden passed away in an ATV accident. It was all pretty surreal.

Taking it even further to the nth degree was a dual storyline. Kip Hughes had won 4 consecutive Sooner Late Model Series titles dating a few years back. He was in the house. Eli Ross is the defending Sooner Late Model Series champion. He was in the house. Couple that with the fact that Eli's brother, Hayden, won the championship just 2 years prior. The brothers won 2 out of the last 3 years. Then add to the storyline that young Hayden died in an ATV accident just months after claiming the series title. He was only 20 years old. There is a Memorial Race held in his honor. Hudson O'Neal won this event in 2024. This year was a double-header right here at Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Oklahoma held on June 27-28, 2025. We made a return trip and covered both of those shows as well.

Tonight on the big half, the Super Late Model drivers took their tachometer to the limit. Two heat races via draw and a Main Event were on tap. The heats would go to two very well known men in these parts, Dan Smith and Eli Ross. Dan is getting to the point where he just might be better than his legendary father. But not if you ask Delbert I might add. Dan told me that he had the High Plains points championship wrapped up last year but problems in Dodge City allowed his father to take the lead and winning the title by a few mere points to end the 2024 season. Tonight Dan was slightly better again. But those 2 legendary Sooner boys were solid as all get out. The Smith’s raced for 3rd and 4th in the A Main as it was all Eli Ross out front with Kip Hughes just a tail feather 🪶 behind. Eli's dad is the promoter of this facility. They live here. Therefore they have tons of family and friends that attend. After his win, victory lane was quite special. Ross was the winner on both race weekends that we attended. He knows the track very well and shows no fear on the big half.

I don't recall exactly how many cars were brought into victory lane. They have it set up right next to the grandstand. After the interviews and the drivers leave, they give all of the young kids and fans a high five as they drive by. This was so cool. Dan Smith brought home Best Appearing Car honors.

Sad to hear the news… Thank you Lonnie Neeley for the opportunity of having you on our team, it was a game changer. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and our community that you were so passionate about. Rest easy brother. 🏁
