Riders from Team USA are starting to show up in Hirafu Niseko Japan. Here are a few, including our own Tarzan, at a quick meet-and-greet at Rythm Outdoor Adventure and Cafe nestled in the Japanese ski village that is hosting the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. The Racing kicks off with the Individual Time Trial on Thursday, a Team Relay is set for Friday, and the Gran Fondo takes place Sunday. Let’s go! A spectacular performance, here is Steve’s report!

“Went straight from the gun, Otto Nebel bridged across and we stayed away for 16 miles. Never got more than a minute gap and got caught. Numerous attacks for the next 20 miles. One rider finally managed to break clear on the 2nd half of lap two. He held a 1:10 lead going into the final lap. Steve went all in on the last big climb which is at the start of each lap. One rider, Bob Hooks, bridged across and caught the lead rider a few miles later. Bob and Steve went full gas and the other rider dropped off after a couple turns. We stayed away til the finish. Bob is also a former pro, raced with Chris Horner on Webcor and later Health Net. A true field sprinter so nothing I could do in the sprint. Bob is also the recent Manhattan Beach state CRIT champ and has been dominating the NorCal racing scene! Spent half the race on two man breakaways so he gets a cookie tonight. 🫡Ttyl”
