Anchored quietly in Charleston Harbor sits a ship that helped change the entire course of the Second World War. ⚓
The USS Yorktown, an Essex class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943, earned eleven battle stars for her service in the Pacific, taking part in some of the most pivotal campaigns of the war before later supporting the Apollo 8 recovery mission in 1968. In 1975, she was permanently docked at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, becoming one of the centerpieces of one of the largest naval and maritime museums in the country.
Thousands of sailors served aboard her over the decades, and today visitors can walk the same flight deck and narrow corridors those crews once called home. She stands as a living monument to the generations of service members who passed through South Carolina's harbors on their way to defend the country.
