Little Missouri Fly Fishing in Arkansas

Little Missouri Fly Fishing in Arkansas We suport and post about any and all fly fishing but dedicated to fly fishing on the Little Missouri River in southwest Arkansas! ADMINS: TexJack

Fly Fishing for Arkansas trout is spread all over the state. The Ouachita Mountains (that's Wah-chi-taw) have some of the most spectacular waters you will find in the state. You will find Murfreesboro, the Little Missouri and Lake Greeson, about 1 hour southwest of Hot Springs and 2 hours from Little Rock. 2 1/2 hours north of Shreveport, a bit more than an hour north-east of Texarkana, and about

4 hours from Dallas. To get here from the southwest make your way to Texarkana and take US 71/59-North, to AR 27-North which will take you right into Murfreesboro. From the south, get to Hope at I-30 and take US 278-West (ARK 4 on old maps) to Nashville, again, to AR 27-North to Murfreesboro. From the southeast make your way to Prescott at I-30 and take AR 19-North to Murfreesboro. From Hot Springs take US 70-West to Kirby, then AR 27-South to Murfreesboro. In Murfreesboro, you will find AR 19-North takes you right to Narrows Dam.

My, my! The last three years have seen an assortment of changes around my part of the world...

That being said, here in early January of 2024, I've decided to bring an end to my guiding days on The Little Mo!

It's been a great ride and I've met lots and lots of amazing people since my very first "official" guide trip about 1992 with Robbie Williams, who became a wonderful friend and, occasionally, a fellow music mate.

I've been gifted to be on the water with three generations of fly fishers! I find that a tad staggering, because I still don't feel like I've been around long enough to do that.

When I first set eyes on the Lower Little Missouri it seemed to be, and in some respects was, a wild and untouched place. I had been fishing up on the Saline River at Shady Lake, Blaylock Creek then over to the Upper Little Mo' at Albert Pike, which was just an extraordinary place in the late 60's and early 70's. Then one Easter weekend, my dad wanted to go see the big dam that he had heard about, so a bunch of us loaded into the station wagon and we headed up.

We got to Riverside Park - which had no playground, no pavilion, no wall - in the early afternoon and that's when I saw several people fishing up above the bridge in what is now the closed zone. They had quite a few very nice trout in possesion, and I knew I had found a new home! I was probably about 13 that spring.

We drove down to an even wilder place - The Old Factory Site - to look into the history of the place. The road was barely a cart trail and, in fact, when we came to the 90 degree curve at the corner of the big pasture, Dad nearly ran into a horse drawn wagon! It was complete with spoked wheels (but with rubber tires) making the curve.

There was, at the time, the very nicely kept Green Thumb Project picnic area at the Factory Site. At the base of the seemingly significant bluff dropping down to the water from the picnic tables was the "original" Honey Hole!

It was there I caught my first Lower River trout!

We used to have to hike through the woods to get to the "Couch Hole" - now River Ridge. The Hind's Bluff Access was another goat path where you couldn't see the river for the trees. And Low Water Bridge was truly a low water bridge, just like the one in the Albert Pike campground! The highway was only about four feet above the water where the little paths run down to water's edge on both sides of the river.

Man! As everything does, the place sure has changed! Murfreesboro is no longer a one horse town – there's at least five, but I believe there's still no stop light in the county! SWAHA and the Riverside Cabins (where we stayed on that early trip) were the only places to stay. Though, later on, I frequently camped out at the Factory Site. What an adventure that always was – way out in the wilds. Seemed like we were a hundred miles from town in there once the sun went down.

I took an interest, not only in fly tying with early cohorts in The Port, but took to building custom fly rods too. That eventually graduated to the first fly fishing specialty shop in Louisiana – Clearwaters Rod & Fly - which ulitmately led to the guiding on the Little Mo' and all you fine people!

I'm quite proud to say I took part in the origins of The North Louisiana Fly Fishers, Toledo Bend Rendezvous, The Little Mo' Fly Fishing Festival, the implementation of the Little Mo's seasonal and permanent Catch & Release, instigating The Skinny Water Project and planting the seeds for development of the AGFC's easement up and down river at the River Ridge Access.

I guess I stayed busy around the river over the years...

My greatest appreciation for all of you who have fished with me over the past thirty years! It was a pleasure and an honor to have been involved in so many lives and my gratitude for what all of you have done for me as well.

Closing this chapter has not been all that hard of a decision as the daily challenges of Sandy's Parkinson's Disease continue to occupy much of our time and I'm staying close to home from here on. It's one thing to be off to the courts for four or five hours – it's another to be a three hour ride back to town. And the simple logistics of being out of touch completely while on the water just don't mesh well!

I'll need to stick around town more and more, but don't feel too bad. I am back to teaching tennis on the professional levels that I once did in the 80's and into the 90's. And who knows, I may pluck some strings with more frequency as well!

But be assured – I WILL BE "Always On The Water"!

David CookseyAnother day on the river with returning characters, David Cooksey and Jim Allen (Shreveport)! I had to do a little digging in the archives, but I found pictures of David and Jim fishing with me in March of 2008!!! Wow, that's some stick-to-it-ness! Very cool...

David Cooksey works on one of the better fish on the day at The Trough! >>>>

The morning was a lot cooler than we would have liked, mid 40's. but at least it wasn't too windy early on. Every time the sun hit though, it seemed 20 degrees warmer! Typical now that the sun is getting higher in the sky. The cloud cover and cool temps was keeping the March Browns down for much of the morning and we weren't seeing very many at first.

There were fish showing themselves somewhat reluctantly around the Trough, though, and we started to throw an A & W for Jim and a March Brown Slider for David, just to see if it would make any difference. And actually , it did! Seemed that the A&W was doing slightly better over all.

Jim AllenFish were doing the usual cruise around the Flat and it was just a matter of having one or two come by the fly at the right time. They also preferred a little speed on the retrieve. Many of the takes were a bit light and they wanted to chase the fly down for the first half of the day!

>

That may have changed after last night's storms. The Upper River came up over a foot and a half today, but with generation all day today the lake is still actually very low at 538.36'! There just isn't much water coming from the woods still...

But we enjoyed bringing strikes up from the depths of the J Ledge, none the less, and we did find a couple of nice fish on the day. I stuck around after the guys left and went back up to The flat to do a little fishing myself for a change! With an A&W once again, I released about as many as I felt good with in 45 minutes! It was pretty furious by 3:30 in the afternoon - at least at the Flat!

There was generation all day today, but there's still nothing slated for all the rest of the week. That actually helps with fish learning to eat March Browns off the top! And even though there weren't a lot of bugs popping out, I did observe quite a few floating adults get chomped under. Sweet!

Waited on generation to stop... worth the wait. Caught 5 quality fish including an absolute UNIT about 14" on a sz 10 olive over white clouser. Bro Don had 10-12 on an orange soft hackle. A very good evening and awesome weather...

Anyone got the generation schedule? Getting "application error" when clicking on the AEP link.

The Eighteenth Ever Little mo' Fly Fishing Festival will be upon us (and me) before we know it!

As always, President's day weekend - this year February 14 - 16. I know, Friday is Valentine's Day, but that happens every couple or three years. Just one of those things we deal with...

Looking to hear back from The Usual Suspects as I just now got around to sending out the word to them. So be looking here to see who's coming.

Most everything happens on the Saturday, morning into the early / mid afternoon. Friday afternoon folks begin to show and one can expect a reasonable amount of food to be around. I've had folks in the past say they felt they couldn't come if they didn't bring food!!! Rest assured, that is far from the case! If you want to bring some eats, feel free to do so, but don't feel compelled!

I've kept the fees for this thing the same from day one: $5 for an individual and $10 for the family!

Keep an eye on this thread for news as it happens!!!

Sure seems like a lot more than seven weeks since the last time on the river! But a new season has started - officially! This time from scratch, that is, no trout in the river to speak of (if indeed there were any at all) after the horrible events of the summer, but stocking resumed this past week!
The Whalen's settle in at Hind's Bluff! Maureen (7) in front, Ed and Kelly and Edward (9) in the distance! The fish were NOT outnumbered though! >>>>
The usual numbers of Rainbows on the first loads and on the average they were about 11 inches and hefty! So that's great to see. Also, I've got word that the AGFC is sending some more Browns within the next few days as well. I'll be anxious to see what they'll have on the truck, size-wise, but there are expected to be somewhere between 1,500-2,000 of those guys on the way. Awesome!

Major flooding on Lake Greeson, the river and surrounding area. Up to 16 inches of rain in parts. Lake came up 10 feet today and the Upper River (Albert Pike) reached 18.54 feet - normal is about 3.5'... Be ready for a prolonged high water event...

Finally, the conditions are getting somewhat closer to normal, but the fishing has been way above average!!! At least this past Wednesday - sorry I'm just now getting to load up a report...
But you'll enjoy this one! I met with Randall Keiser(Alexandria, LA) and his son, Preston, with Chris Perkins along for the ride (actually he was the ride!). We had low water finally for enough hours on a weekday to make a trip worth doing! This week they've been opening up around mid-day each day. Tomorrow and Sunday are even better!
Preston Keiser took no time at all getting into his first fish on the day! There are scads of really nice fish running all over the Park and we could see them coming! >>>>
We had typical morning fog and perfect 55° water, and even a little more clear than usual for this time of year - particularly considering how much water has been moving all winter and spring! Regulars David McAdams and Mike Ingram were in their favorite spots and they were getting fish steadily! In fact, their activity had reached the "obscene" level. Fish on constantly and there was definitely some water being displaced by the sloshing fish! That is, they were generally hefty!
We got Preston and Randall some fast casting instruction and fishing techniques ready to go and it wasn't long before we had some Sliders in the water. I got Preston into a groove with where to land, length of drift and speed for working the fly and headed over to Randall to tie one on. About the time I got the tippet through the eye Preston quietly was into what turned out to be the fish of the day right off!
