5 ALIVE Safety Flash:
Unexpected Encounters: Put Safety First
TRUE STORY
It started as a routine hunt. A leaseholder encountered someone they didn't recognize in the woods. Words were exchanged. Voices rose. What could have ended with both parties walking away instead escalated into a tense confrontation, one that easily could have resulted in serious injury or worse.
The only thing that prevented it from going further was one person choosing to disengage and leave.
Situations like this happen more often than we'd like, and your response can make all the difference.
WHEN A SITUATION FEELS TENSE
Keep your cool. Do not let emotions take control.
Do not take matters into your own hands.
Never confront suspected illegal activity.
Avoid confrontation. Calmly defusing a situation goes much further than making accusations.
Create distance. Back away and move to another safe location.
Notify authorities. Contact local law enforcement or a game warden when appropriate.
REMEMBER
Weyerhaeuser employees, contractors, or researchers will gladly identify themselves. When we share the woods, we also share the responsibility to create a safe environment for everyone. If active operations or equipment are present, stay clear and relocate within your lease boundaries.
Pause. Breathe. Walk away if needed.
A calm decision today
Can prevent a serious injury or a fatal outcome tomorrow.
