Stock Seed Farms

Stock Seed Farms Your trusted partner in planting success since 1956. From my earliest memories, I have been in the seed business. The first is quality seed.

Stock Seed Farms offers a wide range of native grasses, wildflowers, turfgrass, cover crops, pasture, CRP, and wildlife seed. As a small child I watched my parents drill grass seed fields. As I grew, I helped my father bag certified seed wheat and soybeans. I will never forget how upset my mother was when the mice attacked the switchgrass being stored in the upstairs store room in our house. But I

digress…

50 years ago, my parents Lyle & Margaret Stock harvested their first acres of Nebraska Certified grass seed. The seed was a new release from the Agricultural Experiment Station called "Nebraska 28 Switchgrass". The warm season native grass allowed my father to act on his strong commitment to soil conservation and to diversify his traditional corn and livestock farm. With the help and encouragement of the Soil Conservation Service (now the Natural Resource & Conservation Service) and University of Nebraska personnel, my family has been recognized for the last 50 years as a leader in the production and marketing of native grasses and wildflowers. With the help, encouragement and loyalty of our customers, Stock Seed Farms has developed into a strong company expanding the use of native plants nationwide. It has given us great satisfaction working with native grasses and wildflowers. Using native plant materials, millions of acres have been protected from wind and water erosion ( learn about erosion control netting here ), provided food for domestic animals and additionally provided food and shelter for wildlife. For humans, these same acres have provided food for our eyes, mind and soul. We contribute much of our 50 years of success to three elements. We have always tried to set ourselves apart from the rest by producing, conditioning and marketing a better product. Our reputation for producing the highest quality native grass seed proves our commitment. The second is education. We felt that for us to be successful, our customers needed to be successful in their use of native plant material. This catalog (and later our website) became an important educational medium more than a marketing tool. We have spent thousands of hours helping educate not only our customers but others in the native seed industry. The third is a dedicated employee. We have been blessed with hardworking, loyal and dedicated employees who have been the backbone of Stock Seed Farms. Whether they are harvesting, conditioning, selling or shipping, our employees want you to be satisfied with the products you order. We live in a world that is constantly changing and so is our industry. Will native grass be the source of our fuel in the future? Is the next medical cure growing in our prairies? Will our irrigated farmland be turned back to prairie? Wherever the future leads us, Stock Seed Farm will be involved. The Stock family and employees thank you for your business, your commitment to the prairie and the use of native plant material. As we have for 50 years, pledge to maintain quality seed and superior service to our customers. This website is dedicated to STOCK SEED FARMS founders Lyle and Margaret Stock who harvested their first acres of Nebraska Certified grass seed in 1956. The seed was a new release from the Agriculture Experiment Station called, Nebr. 28 Switch grass. The warm-season native grass allowed Lyle to act on his strong commitment to soil conservation and to diversify his traditional corn and soybean farm near Murdock, Nebraska. With the help and encouragement of Soil Conservation Service and University of Nebraska personnel, Lyle has spent the past 40-plus years as a recognized leader in the production of prairiegrass seed. The business is now run by son, Dave. With the help, encouragement and family-like loyalty of customers like you, STOCK SEED FARMS has been allowed to continue its founders' mission and to expand the use of prairie plants, nationwide.

While most wildlife seedings require lower maintenance levels, proper prep & w**d control practices can improve stand vigor.

A strong approach begins with clean site preparation, followed by timely management throughout the growing season. Depending on the planting and w**d pressure, that may include mowing, selective herbicide applications, or a combination of both.

Staying ahead of w**ds helps reduce competition for sunlight, moisture, and nutrients, giving your desired plants a better chance to establish and thrive.

Late summer and early fall is a great time to give your lawn a little extra attention before winter.

As temperatures begin to cool, fall can create a good opportunity to overseed thin or patchy turf, while the right fertilizer can help support healthy growth and root development.

It’s also a good time to start planning ahead for winter lawn prep so your turf is better positioned for next spring.

Fall is one of the best times to establish cool-season grasses and legumes!

Planting at the end of summer and into early fall can mean quicker germination, less w**d competition, and a stronger stand heading into winter. But remember good results still start with good site preparation.

Whether you’re seeding lawn, pasture, forage, cover crops, or other cool season projects, a little planning now will pay off in the long run.
