Originally we set out to make a film about the Appalachian Trail from a first time thru-hiker's perspective in an attempt to make peace with the loss of our dearly departed friend, but along the way we lost the original goals of the trail, and found our deeper, true calling. Balu and Hives: A Tale of the Trail is as much a coming of age story of two hikers as they find themselves falling in love as they stumble around the oldest mountain range in the world, as it is an educational piece promoting economic reform and cultural development in an environmentally friendly way through long distance thru-hiking.
