My biggest frustration running a martial arts school right now!

🥋 “Is my child in for their karate grading?”

As an instructor, sometimes the answer has to be:

Not at the moment.

This weeks conversation!!!

Parent: Is my child in for the next grading?

Sensei: It’s now 10th September, and I still haven’t seen your child back in class.
In fact, we’ve checked and their last training session was 8th July!

That’s over TWO MONTHS without training.

Yet sometimes we’re still asked:

“Are they grading?” 🤷‍♂️

This is where parents need to understand that grading is NOT an automatic invite!

Just because a student has been a certain belt for the required amount of time does not automatically mean they are ready for the next one.

🥋 Consistency plays a massive part.

We need to see them training.

We need to see their technique.

We need to see their improvement.

We need to see that they remember their syllabus.

And most importantly, we need to be confident that they are ready to attempt the grading.

If we haven’t seen a student train for weeks or months, how can we fairly assess whether they’re ready?

Grading isn’t something you are simply due.

It is something you work towards and earn.

We completely understand that families have holidays, school breaks and other commitments — especially over the summer. ☀️

But time away from training still has an impact.

As instructors, our responsibility isn’t to put every student forward because a grading date has arrived.

Our responsibility is to make sure the student standing in front of the examiner is READY.

💛🖤 Attendance. Consistency. Progress. Readiness.

They ALL matter.

ALL IN OR NOTHING AT ALL. 🥋!

I always thought martial arts was simply about learning how to fight, but I was wrong. I want to share my story of how much Martial Arts has impacted my life.

I used to bring my boys to their martial arts classes and wait for two hours while they trained. One day, I realized I might as well join in. I was there for two hours anyway!!

Taking Martial Arts classes turned out to be a deeply transformative experience that helped me grow as a person, face personal challenges and strive for improvement.

I wish I had started earlier, but I am so glad I finally did. If you are unsure whether martial arts is right for you, I encourage you to come give it a try—you won't regret it. I do not regret it, and here I am, 20 years later, after a mayor knee surgery, still practicing Martial Arts. I love it! and I can assure you, you will love it too!!!

Progress in karate is not only about how quickly you move up.

It is about what the training is doing to you along the way.

Is your confidence improving?
Is your focus better?
Are you more disciplined?
More resilient?
More patient? 🥋

That is the kind of progress that lasts.

For children, that might show up in school and at home.
For adults, it might show up in attitude, consistency, and how they handle pressure.

If you keep giving your best, you are moving in the right direction, even when the progress feels slow. 📈

We teach children, teens, and adults across South Ockendon, Grays, and Wickford.

Karate is rewarding, but it is not always easy.

There will be challenging sessions.
Frustrating moments.
Days when confidence drops.
Times when progress feels slow.
Times when you wonder whether it is worth it.

That is normal.

The people who grow the most are not the ones who never struggle. They are the ones who keep going through the struggle. 🔥

That is where resilience is built.
That is where confidence becomes real.
That is where strength begins to mean something.

For children, teens, and adults, karate has a way of showing you what you are capable of when you refuse to quit. 🥋

We teach across South Ockendon, Grays, and Wickford.

One of the first lessons in martial arts is very simple.

Turn up.

Not only when you feel like it.
Not only when it is easy.
Not only when confidence is high.

Turn up, train, and keep going. 🔥

For children, that habit can make a huge difference. It helps build routine, responsibility, focus, and the ability to stick with something even when it gets difficult.

That lesson carries into school, home life, and everything else.

Real discipline often starts with one small thing done consistently, showing up for class. 👊
